Owner description: Church decorated with elaborate murals depicting traditional Zuni dancers.

Beautiful old Spanish church no longer open to the public. This historic church is in need of both interior and structural renovation work. Hopefully SHPO and the federal government will step up to the challenge and preserve this important piece of history. Undoubtedly, donations and grants for renovation work would be a blessing.

We have visited this space several times over the last 20 years and the murals inside are spectacular, but the building is having major water and structural issues.

Book a tour to this church at the Zuni Visitor Center. Be prepared for a cold, damp, somewhat crumbling environment which will be worth every minute if you are interested in the murals within. Begun in the 70's by artist Alex Seotewa, the murals depict Zuni ceremonials. They are starting to fall off the walls, and will have to be removed if the church is to be restored. No photography is currently allowed, but some images are available on the web.

Sad because the Mission Building is an contradiction of a trail of Catholic oppression throughout the mid west and west. And now denial. I would be ashamed to be a Catholic from then to today. No apology, no restitution no confession. God knows. The art work deserves to be outside because it better represents the ancient-modern culture of beautiful native expression of themselves.

If you go to Zuni, you will certainly want to visit the Spanish church which is filled with history and mystery. I will not attempt to explain it or describe it, but it left me with a feeling of overwhelming awe. There are some places that carve a place into your heart, and this is one of them.
