Sanctuary Baines' Camp

All the staff were lovely, great fun and nothing was too much trouble. Our stay was made extra special, as they sang a traditional Setswana song to me on my 40th birthday and gave me a birthday cake and a bottle of champagne, we also had a lovey bubble bath on the balcony with hippos grunting in the water below...magical. Our safari guide Max was also great. He had lots of knowledge about the wildlife and plants and was good fun as well. It was lovely to only have another 8 guests staying at the lodge, it felt exclusive and special, the food was top class...everything was just perfect. It was also amazing to be on a private reserve when viewing the animals. We also loved the Elephant experience, meeting Jabu and Marula - check out Living with Elephants on Facebook.

Room Tip: All lodges have unique views. We stayed close to the main restaurant area which was fine

The people, service, food, and guiding were excellent. We saw Wild Dogs (only sighting for us during the entire 2 week safari) and that off-set the very wet nature of the camp's location. We had to pass through a LOT of water just to get to and from the camp, even to go on a game drive. This was the smallest and most rustic of the 5 camps we visited in South Africa and Botswana. That said, we really enjoyed our 2 night stay and the surprise couple's bubble bath on the deck the last night was a nice treat after a long day. If you don't mind the wet location (comes with the territory) and less than luxury accommodations (we didn't mind), we can definitely recommend Baines Camp for a 2 night stay.

Room Tip: Any - all the same and only 5 total.

Baines introduced us to the incredible beauty and seductive nature of Botswana. Moreover, the excellent service provided by the staff was certainly part of why we are so happy that we chose to take our long awaited safari with Sanctuary Camps. The smallest and most intimate of the Sanctuary Camps, Baines is a very special place that is highly deserving of its Certificate of Excellence. We cannot say enough positive things about the personal service we received from ALL the staff as their attention and care for our comfort went above and beyond our expectations. A special thanks to Max for being such a great guide, Voodoo for our boat excursion and TK for an enchanting Mokoro ride.

This was our first Sanctuary Lodge and it was very special. There were only 5 thatched comfortable lodges here and so the service was very personal and it was quite isolated so very quiet. We enjoyed a peaceful trip in a mokoro canoe the first night, a boat trip to the hippo pool straight from the jetty at the lodge and amazing day and night drives seeing a spotted hyena, leopard and elephants at close range. The roads were more like rivers and you got thrown about a bit but it all added to the atmosphere especially when you had water monitors swimming alongside the vehicle and the driver opened his door to let the water out. We pre-booked the elephant experience run by Sandy and Doug Groves which was very informative and lots of fun. The staff ensured we had a memorable stay with their unique 'white elephant experience' of hot bubble baths on your private balcony under the stars on the last night! The food was very well presented and delicious. There was a small but well presented swimming pool with sun loungers - a lovely place to relax. A wonderful camp in every way.

Room Tip: There are only 5 lodges and all looked similar with their own private balcony.

Sanctuary Baines’ Camp is our smallest and most intimate camp, built on raised platforms high above the Boro River in a huge private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. An eco-friendly property built using only commercially grown wood, with over 150,000 recycled aluminium cans incorporated within the walls to provide insulation. The camp is raised above the permanent water of the Boro River while wooden walkways connect the main areas and luxury rooms. The swimming pool and the wide wooden deck that surrounds the main dining and sitting room is the ideal place to relax while observing the varied wildlife present here. See prowling lions looking for prey at the edge of the lagoon that the camp overlooks, or watch one of the many elephants who live in the area. The five suites at Sanctuary Baines’ are opulent and luxurious, with ensuite facilities and four-poster beds. Traditional safari ceiling fans create a cooling breeze at even the hottest times of the year. Should you wish, your bed can be wheeled out onto the private wooden deck for a night under the stars, overlooking the shimmering waters of the Boro River where hippo can often be spotted. Or take an indulgent soak under the stars on your own private viewing deck in our opulent star bath. At Baines’ Camp, the sky’s the limit. ... more   less
