We stayed at the Eagle Island Lodge on Feb2017. You feel like royalty since the moment you arrive. We were received by the whole staff. Lynn, the manager explained to us evenrything we needed to make our stay most pleasant. I wish I could remember everyone's name but Kevin, our guides Moses and Phillip, Alex, Gatby, Mahatna( I'm sorry I now these are spelled wrong) were all excellent. The rooms are to die for, you will not miss anything, we even had time for a massage before leaving and it was perfect. Our last night the staff sang for us and African cuisine dinner was served. Wish could have stayed longer. Thank you for these wonderful experience!!

We spent 2 nights at Belmond Khwai River Lodge and then 1 night here and I wish it was reversed because the water safaris were just unbelievable. When we arrived, we went on a 30 minute helicopter safari which I wasn't all that enthusiastic about but it turned out to be a really incredible experience. You can see things from the air the you can't on the ground or in the water, like hippos in the pools. I highly recommend that experience. The location of the lodge adjacent to a river filled with hippos and across from huge open space where animals roam is lovely, and makes for perhaps the most beautiful African sunset ever.

The game viewing is quite good though I don't think the conditions with a lot of water are good for seeing cats. We got up close and personal with a gorgeous bull elephant, and saw lots of crocodiles and hippos. The bird life in particular is stunning and I really am not a bird person. The fish eagles are plentiful and give the lodge its name.

Our room was modern and really well appointed, including a plunge pool on the front patio and both an indoor and outdoor shower. We were able to observe hippos, elephant, giraffe and zebra from our room. There is a bar near the main lodge that overlooks the river and is a great place for an evening cocktail as you watch the sun go down.

I highly, highly recommend this place, even for seasoned safari goers like us because the water makes it a very different experience. The chef made me several gluten free items including GF butter cookies for a picnic which was a nice surprise. The only negative is that the food at dinner was just OK - typical of even the best safari lodges but the food at Khwai River Lodge was much better - but I never expect great food at lodges so it didn't really impact the experience.

Put the Belmond Eagle Island Lodge on your bucket list, and make sure before you go that it will be during the time when water is abundant and you can go on jet boat and makoros. And definitely do the helicopter!

Room Tip: All rooms are amazing!

Dear tenntabb,

Thank you so much for recommending our lodges to fellow travellers, it's reviews like yours that remind us why we love what we do so much!

The helicopter safari is a must, it really allows a person to view the animals and landscape from an entirely new perspective. We are so glad you decided to take to the air and experience this! There really is so much to do and see at the lodge, and also if you just want to relax by our private pool and reconnect, this is the ideal spot.

The area is not known for a high concentration of cats, they tend to follow the buffalo, but we are pretty sure you would've seen the cats at Belmond Khwai River Lodge.

We do hope you welcome you back to the lodges again soon and you are welcome to keep up to date with the latest news from Belmond Safaris, find us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and search for @BelmondSafaris.

Warm regards
Louise

this is quite a unique, luxury, expensive lodge, I would recommend this Lodge more for couples or the solo artist then for families with small children. Staff at the lodge is lovely, and the view from the rooms are exceptional overlooking the watering hole from your plunge pool. What really was not great was all the bugs during dinner as the dining area is an open space and the bugs are attracted to the light... As we went in the dry season October / November we did not see much wildlife even though the drivers tried their best. Highlight for me was Mophane's stories from his childhood about how the animals came to be and the trip to the local village with all the beautiful kids and crafts. Can also highly recommend the helicopter over the Okovango, absolutely breathtaking

Dear ZeeGee10,

Thank you for your review of your recent stay with us and it's wonderful that you enjoyed all the little additional touches at our bedtime turn-down as much as we did creating them, we hope you included a trip to the local village that is not far from the lodge.

The helicopter safari is indeed one of the most memorable safari experiences as you can access areas not easily accessible by land otherwise.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your safari experience, besides the bugs joining you for dinner in the evenings!

Belmont eagle island in the delta was a truly amazing experience. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the food was average, a bit too complicated attempts. Simpler dishes and more grilled meats would be a better option. And the internet, which is only available in the gift shop, was really poor. Everyone would frustratingly huddle in there to check email. Yes your win the middle of nowhere, but if they're going to have it, it should work.

Okay, that aside, we had an amazing safari experience. The mokoros, the canoes, we took out on the delta were a fun experience. We did 3 game drives a day. I think like 8 total. Our guide, TC was amazing. He worked extremely hard to give us a first rate experience and was an excellent guide and tracker. Very knowledgeable and personable. He made it a great experience.

The staff in general was quite lovely. The rooms were great. You have a private plunge pool in each room which I didn't use. The view of the delta from the lounge/restaurant area and rooms is stunning. You and animals coming up all the time. Showers were okay, had a bit of trouble at first getting hot water. But then was fine.

The helicopter ride is a must. Frank is an amazing pilot and guide. But you only can appreciate the full vastness of the delta ecosystem by helicopter. Maybe my favorite part of the delta visit.

Belmond just renovated the camp. It has a few kinks to workout but I highly recommend it. Truly excellent experience.

Dear USCKaboom,

Thank you for your wonderful review, despite the poor Wifi connectivity currently at the lodges. Due to the remote area of the lodges, the connectivity is indeed slower than in major cities.

We are delighted that the rest of your stay was so memorable and that you had such an amazing safari experience with us!

Thank you for the excellent recommendation to other travellers.

The helicopter ride is amazing and it enables you to see animals that you would not otherwise discover like Sitatunga It also enables you to see the expanse of the delta and the huge numbers of animals & birds it supports. However it did overshadow everything else in the lodge at the time we stayed there (except, perhaps for the discovery of a roosting Pel's Fishing Owl just as we were leaving).

The lodge has been recently renovated and the rooms are truly excellent. The food and service and the guides were also first class. There was a restricted programme of tours through the channels as the water level was too low (when we visited) for safety in many parts.

Dear dhongkong,

Thank you for your review of your recent stay at the Belmond Eagle Island Lodge. The helicopter safari is indeed one of the many highlights at the lodge as you get to see areas of the Okavango Delta that is not accessible by land, especially during the wet/rainy season.

During the dry season we take the vehicles out on nature/game drives, and we do hope you enjoyed seeing the landscape and possibly also a walking safari with one of our guides.

There has been good rainfall in the area recently, so we are hopeful that the floodwaters will start pushing down the delta soon!
