My family and I have visited the Thomas Cole House several times. Each time we are engaged by knowledgeable docents and intriguing new exhibits.
The property is a must see for art and history buffs.

I did enjoy everything pertaining to Thomas Cole and his family. The high tech presentations were "state of the art", if you will. Fantastic. Keep up the restorations and additions.
I did not enjoy the modern art at all!

We saw this first, then Olana the next day for a peek into the lives of two great painters. For us, first time Hudson River Valley visitors, it was a great intro to the essence of the HRV - both the beauty of the valley that drew and draws visitor but also that inspired the Hudson River Valley school of painting. While Olana is by far the more spectacular house, I preferred this house for its simplicity and greater age, and for how the tour presented Cole's lament for the encroach of civilization on his "wilderness". Cole is credited as the father of the HRV School. (But by all means see both.) Only a little less so than Olana, this tour doesn't delve much into the character of Cole's paintings. More his life and times. Also, and again at both houses, I could do without the time spent on the visiting artist exhibition. A distraction. Oh well. Off to see what is said to be a great collection of HRV School at the Met in NYC.

Standing on the porch of the house waiting for the tour to begin, I could see the exact same mountains Thomas Cole saw. It was like looking at one of his paintings in real life.

A wonderfully miantained home; the grounds are pretty too; the view of the Catskills from the porch of the mansion, is spectacular. Take a guided tour; we had guide Deborah; a very enthusiastic and well informed leader. At the time of our visit, September 2017, the New Studio held exhibits by Kiki Smith; she is quite an interesting multi media artist. A quaint gift shop holds a few nice things; as well as an informative 10 minute movie about Thomas Cold and the idea of the Hudson River School of Art(a trend of art style from the 1800s)...
