Unchanged for decades, New Park is a great place to get a slice of New York City pizza. It's a quintessential local's place (nobody is using words like "quintessential" there!), but not unfriendly to "foreigners" (everybody who's not from South Queens -- believe me, you'll stick out a little). Service is fast: if it's just one or two of us, we order a slice or two; if I have the family, we get a pie. The atmosphere is minimal; just a window in the front with some benches, and a small "dining room" in the back. No waitress sevice: you get your pizza at one of the two counters, you eat it, and you leave (they also do the usual takeout). The restaurant has parking; it's usually a bit tight, but you should be able to find a space (there's also street parking if you need it).
I suspect the vast majority of slices sold are just plain (cheese) - which is the NYC classic -- but you can get all the usual toppings if you want. It's very subjective how high New Park ranks in the NYC pizza "standings," but it's justifiably ranked near the top. Bottomline, if you like pizza, you're going to like the pizza you get served here.
One thing I particularly like about the location is that they're just a couple blocks from the Belt Parkway, and therefore a very convenient place to stop if you're headed to JFK from Brooklyn. The restaurant is only a couple minutes from JFK. As I can never predict the traffic on the Belt coming from Jersey, I leave extra time when I'm flying out of JFK -- and stop for a slice at New Park if I have time. I sometimes stop on my way home, too. The pizza is that good!
