To think that this could have been 1400 tract houses instead of this magnificent public park!

Historic and spacious, this is worth a visit.

Theodore Roosevelt county park, adjacent to the village of Montauk and numerous other nature preserves farther east, is a perfect location to hike, bike, horse back ride, and enjoy the great outdoors. The trail begins at third house, one of the historical landmarks of Montauk, and winds upward through bucolic fields and pastures to the summit of a hill. From here you can see all across the area, and, weather permitting, to the coast of New england. From here you will descend until you reach the edge of the farmland. The rest of the preserve is largely grassland and scrub, reminiscent of Montauk's historic Moorlands. The preserve contains such landmarks as Oyster pond, a brackish lake divided from the ocean only by a spit of sand, Ogden's brook, and the remnants of a Native American settlement. Beyond TR county park lie Camp Hero and Montauk Point state parks, which can be reached by hiking eastward from TR. I recommend purchasing a hiking map of the area at either the Montauk or Sag Harbor bike shop if you intend to hike a long distance. If you are unable to, stick to the Paumanok path, blazed with a white rectangle, which will eventually take you to Montauk Point Lighthouse.
Good Luck!

Me and my friend love bike riding, so when we found this beautiful, lush park, we were a bit perplexed. We followed the trail as best we could but inevitably got lost. We covered so much terrain, from rocks, sand, woodchips and everything in between. It was starting to get late and I must say I was getting worried, so we actually found our way out thru an incline that led to a dead-end! We felt so glad to be out and have experienced so much of that wonderful park, we went to get a beer right away! Thank you Teddy Roosevelt, you were a fantastic president!!!
