The Lake House
Reviewed 14 July 2009

We found this hotel through vrbo.com for extended stays. The reviews were very good so we booked a four night stay. Our hotel room was on the first floor and was very large with two queen beds and a twin bed, hardwood floors, wood walls, and a nice view of the lake. There are five of us so this was really perfect for us. Our breakfast was included and out of this world! The kids got hot chocolate, we got orange juice and coffee and we all had omelets with homemade biscuits and fried potatoes and all the fixings, with fresh strawberries. Complete price was $175/night with breakfast.
The view from the deck is spectacular. A relaxing evening of drinks and the flickering of the boat lights off the lake made the trip complete. We are looking forward to next years visit already. I don't think you could ask for any better treatment than what the staff at this hotel gave each of us. Diane, the manager, loves to talk about the history of the Lake House including the gangsters that used it as a speakeasy during prohibition and the ghosts that are often seen. This hotel is located outside of Richfield Springs and has lovely grounds surrounding the lake. Our favorite part, Stargazing next to the lake in one of the lounge chairs. Thanks for the memories !

A wonderful surprise. Was in the Cooperstown area and in dire need of upgrading from where I booked, especially if I were to bring my wife along. We had a wonderful time in this grand old house and the stay probably would have been wonderful if it were in a tin shack if Chris the hostess was taking care of things. The breakfast was great (try to sneak 2 of the breakfast biscuits - they are amazing) and the entire staff went beyond being accomomodating on all fronts with what ever we needed. Really wish we could have stayed longer than 2 nights and would for sure try to find a reason to go back if I am anywhere near. When you have your great stay please pet Bella one the dog team dogs for me.

We brought our 12 year old boys to play baseball at Dreams Park. We had 5 families spread out in the 8 rooms upstairs, and the staff took very good care of our entire group.
Some of us enjoyed activites on the lake boating & fishing, while the rest of us simply enoyed the beautiful trees, and lakeview. One night we invited our other baseball families over for dinner. Our entire group had a blast, the dinner was great, we enjoyed music and even danced. A couple of our families are scheduled to return to the Lakehouse next year with their younger boys and their baseball teams. GREAT FOOD & GREAT SERVICE....

My husband and I wanted to visit Cooperstown and wanted to stay near the water. We found the Lake House- it is on a gorgeous lake- we watched the best sunsets and used the canoe in the morning before breakfast- the lake was so calm. We had a delicious meal in the restaurant on the first floor- it wasn't busy and we had a great meal and great attention. We really liked their huge selection of wine, also. Our room overlooked the lake, the bed was great and the entire place was very unique and interesting. We recommend it highly.

I tried to plan a wonderful birthday weekend for my baseball fan husband. After a fair amount of research, I selected the Lakehouse Restaurant and Bed and Breakfast. It seemed reputable; The inn's owners were members of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, the website was fairly up to date, and the reservation process went smoothly.

After a long drive, we arrived... As others have reported, no one was stationed anywhere near the check-in area. Poking around yielded an old (broken?) computer and piano stored on the porch. The young man who finally greeted us did not know which room we were staying in. He consulted the owner, who led us to our room.

The first thing the owner did was show us the "trick" for turning on the single florescent light in the bathroom. A single glance around our $100 dollar a night room revealed peeling wallpaper, water stains on the ceiling, indoor/outdoor carpeting in the bathroom, a 13" TV, a small round table topped with a vinyl tablecloth, and many flies swarming the room. We were told that there was one seating for breakfast and the owner started to walk away. We asked him about a room key and we were told that they didn't use them. We were left to process all that had just happened. My husband sat down on the bed, and began to share that he wasn't sure he could stay the night, when we began to hear staff screaming at each other!

That sealed it, we had to do something about the situation. My husband went to talk with the owner. The owner thanked us for pointing out the water stains and peeling wallpaper and offered us the option of an equally unacceptable room. When we refused, he reviewed the inn's policy of no refunds and he actually agreed that the best option would be to dispute the charges with our credit card company.

To wrap up this horrible experience in a nutshell, BUYER BEWARE! The owner appeared to know his policy of no refunds would prevail. We ended up spending over $200 for a room we didn't stay in due to health and safety concerns. Our unfortunate experience with this proprietor led to a very expensive, one night birthday bust!
