Stayed last summer.

Stunning locations. Stayed in the Frangipani wing. 2 suites connected. Rooms were large and spacious and well appointed, as was the bathroom. Nespresso machines in the room, and a basket of fruit on arrival were appreciated.

I especially liked the private island Ilot Mangénie, which involved a quick speedboat trip from the jetty. The island was very quiet and relaxing. A restaurant there meant plenty drinks, food available. Sea urchins meant one needed reef shoes there.

Restaurants were good, reasonable choice available.

What I didn't like about the hotel - small points perhaps, but annoying nonetheless;

1. Very annoying to find guests in neighbouring suites smoking on their balconies. Meant that unless you had all windows closed you would get smoke drifting into your suite at odd times. Would rather the hotel either keep one part of the hotel completely non smoking, so that we could sit on our balcony without having to inhale others' smoke.

2. One late afternoon there was a guest operating a drone for over 2 hours on the beach. He flew the drone low at times, and close to guest rooms, and swimmers. Surprised this was allowed given privacy, safety concerns.

3. Breakfast at La Republik on the beach was very good, except for a large number of stray cats waiting for crumbs at the tables. There were a huge number, and the restaurant should have done more to keep them away, given food was being eaten.

Whilst the setting in stunning and the rooms as good as one could hope for, the hotel felt somewhat impersonal. There wasn't the warm hospitality one receives at many top end hotels. We were never greeted by name by any of the staff as we are at other luxury hotels, resulting in it feeling somewhat impersonal.

Room Tip: Choose the Frangipani wing

Dear JC,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback of your stay with us last summer. We are disappointed to read that there were certain aspects of the resort that were not to your taste. We pride ourselves in offering the ultimate luxury and seclusion so please accept our apologies for the disruption caused by the drone. I am pleased to advise that drone flights are no longer permitted at the resort and we have also since addressed the stray cat issue.

We are equally sorry to read you found our staff impersonal as we love to warmly welcome all guests with the Mauritian hospitality we are renowned for.

We continually strive to improve all that we do at Shangri-La's Le Touessrok Resort & Spa and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our resort so you can relax in our beautiful surroundings and our private island, Ilot Mangenie and experience the improvements that have been made.

Best regards,

Bernhard Haechler

We decided to avoid the searing heat of Europe to enjoy the perfect temperatures of Mauritius in their winter. The trade off was a much longer journey, which was bearable thanks to the Emirates upgrade roulette, for a quick 5 night / 6 day fly and flop.

The hotel was beautiful set in expansive grounds, manicured sand and perfect turquoise seas. In fact everything the pictures boast.

A quiet hotel meant a great suite upgrade, purchased much cheaper locally than via our travel agent. We had no problems finding sun or pool side beds. Even when the hotel is full there are so many beaches and places to sit that I would expect that you would always find a quiet spot. And don't worry about being near the bar - there was great drink and food service at your sun bed.

Our favourite days were spent on Ilot Mangenie, the hotels private island, where we ate fantastic prawns and bananas in rum. We were spoilt rotten by the fantastic team and nothing was too much trouble including cleaning our sun glasses when we arrived.

Avoid Ile aux Cerfs unless you have kids you need to keep busy. It's overcrowded and far from idyllic. In fact leave them at the onsite kids and teens club that had lots of organised activities and take some me time in the excellent spa!

We ate well and tried all the restaurants. The evening buffet in Le Bazar offered a vast selection including dishes from the Indian and Japanese restaurants. Whilst the food was good it did at times feel a little canteen like and I would wonder what it would be like if the hotel was full. If you think you are going to eat here ( Le Bazar ) often then go for a prepaid half board option as the local cost was £65 per person or 2500 rupees. If you then decide to eat in the other restaurants you will get an allowance towards your meal anyway - between 2100 and 2200 rupees p.p.

We ate breakfast in the Republik Beach Club and Grill. Very relaxing with breakfast cooked to order. The perfect start to the day. In the evening the cocktails and great club style music made the perfect spot to watch the sun go down. It's a shame we missed the weekend parties and BBQ.

Highly recommend - We'd go back in a heartbeat.

Dear Karen,

A tropical Winter escape to Shangri-La's Le Touessrok Resort & Spa is indeed a good idea! It was our pleasure to welcome you and thank you for your many compliments about the resort and team who assisted you throughout your stay.

What better way to spend a holiday than relaxing on our exclusive private island and taking in the beautiful ocean views from your room. It sounds like you had the perfect holiday in paradise. Are are disappointed to read that you felt the Le Bazar restaurant buffet option was a little disappointing, as we truly pride ourselves in the quality and range of cuisine we have available.

Hopefully on your next visit you can experience more of our lively nightlife and entertainment.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Beautiful scenery. Great setting for breakfast. The private island extremely beautiful. Wonderful. The whole country smells good. We had a wonderful time. The whole design is beautiful and relaxing.

At the last day, I lost my glasses, but need to drive back to airport in hours. The staff managed to help me find a temporary solution and prevented a big disaster.

Took my wife and children there as a surprise, having last been there 26 years ago on our honeymoon. Hotel was excellent then, and if anything has gotten even better. Lovely staff made you feel so welcome, great location and rooms, fabulous restaurants and great facilities. What more could you want?
