We stayed at the Zenji Hotel in May, during "low season" for tourism in Zanzibar. The staff, in particular Hassan, were absolutely brilliant. They gave us honest advice on itineraries around Zanzibar; they helped us to locate a photographer quickly; and helped in many other ways. For value-for-money, food, services and location - and for overall experience - we truly believe this is one of the best places in Zanzibar. You could stay in one of the super-expensive, super-classy hotels - but you would never get the warm, authentic reception that the Zenji Hotel and the wonderful team offers to the islands. We would 100% recommend this to friends or anyone else visiting Stone Town.

Room tip: All the rooms we saw were great!

We stayed 3 nights in Room 1001 Nights and we absolutely loved the room and the decorations. We had a balcony overlooking the street below. There was AC but we didnt use it as the night was cooling enough with the fans. There was also hot shower though the water pressure is weak and the second person to shower has limited hot water. We were greeted by the friendly staff everytime we go in / out of the guesthouse. We could also hear the Muslim prayers in the wee hours of morning but I believe this may be the case for all guesthouses within Stone Town. The beds were also creaky and our bath mat and handtowel were not replaced after housekeeping. Had expected more for the price we paid.

Breakfast was simple with bread, eggs, fruits, juices and home made jam (the pineapple jam with vanilla is so good!). There is also a bistro downstairs and we love the seafood pasta there. The shop also sells some products from the local recycle workshop.

The hotel is located about 10-15mins walk from Forodhani Gardens and it's perfectly safe to walk there at night. There are also mom and pop shops, money changer and taxi stands conveniently located next door. The nearest restaurant is probably about 5-10mins walk.

We booked the spice tour through them but the service of the tour was poor. We were supposed to be picked up at 9am but there was some confusion and we only got picked up at 9.20am, then went on around Stone Town to pick up various people, before detouring back to our hotel at 10am! It was a waste of time. The tour was slightly more expensive than outside so it may be better to just book directly with a tour agent.

Room tip: Take Room 1001 Nights - great view of the street

The Zenji Hotel was great as a base for exploring Stonetown. The room was comfortable, but VERY noisy as we were right on Malawi Rd - you get the shipping containers being transported to and from the port throughout the night. This might be different for other rooms set back from the road. The location is only a 5-7 min walk to Forodhani Gardens, and another 10 or so onto Shangani (the more touristy area). There are great restaurants here, but we enjoyed being a bit further from this area and being able to head right into the Old Town and explore the winding streets. The breakfast at Zenji was great, and lovely to be up on the rooftop. The staff are very friendly and helpful. One tour we arranged through the hotel was not really up to standard though, and we only recieved part of the tour we paid for. We also were unable to shower before we left to the airport as the water had been turned off by the authorities for being 'unhygenic'.

Room tip: Ask for a room set back from Malawi Rd

Dear Louisa,
Many thanks for your feedback. It helps us to improve our service to our guests so we very much appreciate the information. You booked a shared spice tour with us and part of the tour (if you wish to do the longer version) is to visit the slave cave. Unfortunately the government closed the cave, which of course we should have known so we could have informed you in advance about this. If you write to info@zenjihotel.com we are happy to give a compensation for that missed part! As for the water: so very sorry. The general government owned water pipe broke and 3 areas in Stone Town did not had access to clean water. The moment you came back from the tour we were just cleaning our tanks to be sure clean water would come out. We can understand it is nice to freshen up before traveling. Our apologies for that. We were surely happy to read you enjoyed our breakfast and our location in the more authentic, less touristic part of StoneTown. We hope you had a good trip home and hope we will be able to welcome you another time, so we can make up for the troubles you encountered. Best wishes, the Zenji Team

We just loved staying at this place for our 6 nights in Stonetown. The staff is superfriendly, always happy and ready to help without expecting anything in return. We stayed at a few different rooms as we prolonged our stay and all the rooms were so nice with great atmosphere. Towels folded as cute swans on the bed and there homemade soaps that smelled wonderful and a great included breakfast!
