Owner description: The mission of the West Point Museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret historically significant artifacts pertaining to the United States Military Academy, United States Army and the Profession of Arms. The Museum supplements cadet academic, cultural and military instruction and provides educational programs and services for military and civilian personnel. As a public institution, the museum stimulates interest in the United States Military Academy, the United States Army and the Military profession. In addition to the main museum building in Olmsted Hall, the Museum also administers Fort Putnam which it operates seasonally. The Museum also maintains part of its collection on display on Post with the cannon collection on Trophy Point, The superintendant portraits in the Cadet Mess and artwork in many of the academic and administrative buildings. All visitors to the United States Military Academy are encouraged to tour the Museum to view what is considered to be the oldest and largest diversified public collection of miltaria in the Western Hemisphere. The Museum does not require ID to visit. ID for everyone over 16 will be needed if you plan to tour the Academy grounds. Please visit the West Point Garrision webpage for further visitor information.

After saying goodbye to my cadet who will be beginning his first year at West Point Academy, my wife and I headed over the museum to keep our hearts and mind busy. What a great museum!! If you are a military buff or not, this place will keep you entertained and will have you leaving proud. It is located just outside the gates of West Point. The museum is never quite super busy which is a surprise to me. If you placed this museum in Manhattan or San Francisco, I imagine it would be attracting thousands of visitors everyday. There is no other museum quite like this one. Stop by to learn and appreciate why you are a free United State citizen today.

The West Point museum is a terrific facility, located just outside the Thayer Gate of West Point in the town of Highland Falls NY. Stop by if you want to see history of the Academy, along with exhibits on Cadet life including a mockup of what a cadet barracks (bunk room) looks like. Enjoy!

The West Point Museum offers many exhibits detailing military history. It covers significant campaigns (relative to the evolution of warfare), and several varieties of weapons, from swords, to guns, to tanks, to atomic bomb casings. Very interesting museum, and it's free. Give yourself at least 90 minutes to get a good feel for the place.

If you only have time for one, take the tour. It is fabulous and the docents, while non military are outstanding. Our guide offered a wealth of information about the past, present and future of the academy.

We will come back and visit again. Very well organized museum in which one can learn more than just about West Point. Highly recommended.
