Have went to the North Pole by way of the Great Smokey Mountains Railroad twice over the past 3 years. All the staff was friendly and especially Santa which spent a lot more time on our "Standard" car than I thought he would. Wasn't in a big hurry and seemed to enjoy his job. The town itself is fantastic small town. Be sure to look up the woodworker adjacent to the train depot. He works on wooden toys and looks like Santa's twin. The only difference between the trips we have made is Santa's helpers on the cars. Some take it seriously while others appear to be just another job. As far as following the movie it really doesn't. You do ride a train and get hot chocolate and a treat, pickup Santa from a plywood town and ride back to the depot. If you are expecting this adventure to go along with the book or movie you will be let down. Overall a good experience and the look on my kids face was worth every penny.

We went in October mid week.. every year the fall season differs.
So check before you plan your trip.
We took Open car. As we dint get booking in other category.. we did book it last minute. It starts from Bryson city.. the city is small and picturesque. .
Had lunch there and boarded 2pm train. The journey is awesome.. wonderful scenary . As it was a open car, means natural cool breeze greets you and thw photographer in you can experiment a no of photos.
Its a must thing to do..the following snaps are captured during the journey

I had wanted to take this train for years and finally got the chance and now they have a steam engine. We booked the open car only because we couldn’t get 2 seats together in the regular train cars. It turned out that standing up and hanging out the side of the open car was the best part. They even had some great entertainment on the train and we had lunch in the Kostas Family Greek restaurant in Dillsboro. This is the absolutely loveliest way to spend a day! Don’t miss their toy train museum. It is a huge collection including a giant layout with everything imaginable except the kitchen sink.

Took 3 grand children for the trip to the North Pole. They LOVED it. We will take more of the children when they get older.

We've often ridden on excursions with the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, from Thomas the Tank Engine, to the Polar Express, to the Peanuts Halloween experience, to the Boy Scout railroading merit badge trip. We've always enjoyed the rides, and have been pleased with the professionalism and courtesy of the staff. I highly recommend it!
