Rainy day in Highlands, thought we could kill some hours here, but it is tiny
That said, the art installations were excellent

Look for the Covered Bridge, behind it is this unique place. They usually have several interesting exhibits. The artwork is quite fascinating. It is located close to downtown, on the way to some of the waterfalls. (Dry Falls & Bridal Falls are just a few miles down the road.)

What a neat place! We visited when the galleries featured three shows: a juried show of gorgeous wood chairs (each a work of art); a survey of textile arts and artists; and a ceramic exhibit by a single artist. Each exhibit was well-designed with a good amount of information about each artist. The works were fine art yet representative of the region. The fabric artists, for example, worked with different fabrics but all spoke of the human experience and how it's both geographically specific and universal.

The grounds are beautiful. We brought a small picnic lunch and enjoyed it sitting in the secluded pavillion beside the creek (take the path through the metal sculptures and into the storybook section.)

The covered bridge that marks the entrance to the Bascom is both beautiful and functional. People couldn't resist taking photos that are going to look gorgeous on their living room walls.

The gift shop features regionally made jewelry, textiles, sculptures, paper products, glassware, pottery, and other wonderful finds. Do visit!

This is truly one of the must see venues when in Highlands. The Bascom usually has at least one amazing exhibit going, and they're always free.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Highlands, along with the waterfalls and great dining. We visited on a Saturday and toured the art gallery and shopped for hand-crafted gifts in the attached gift shop. The Bascom is also an educational center, with classes and lectures and other learning experiences for all ages. On the day we visited, we were lucky enough to be there during a special pottery sale, and we loaded up on gifts for friends and family and items for our own home. Everyone was personable, helpful, cheerful. I really enjoyed The Bascom.
