Really good spot more or less on the beach so sleeping to the sound of waves nothing about the camp owners but the birds are soooo noisy all night we have never heard anything like it, even drowned out the waves a few times!! Only down is the time limit on the showers - 3 mins hot shower that then goes cold, I understand there is a water shortage but cold water is still water!! Plus 3 minutes was more like 2 - 2 1/2, not really enough time after a day on the beach to get rid of all that sand !!

I have been visiting North Stradbroke Island all my life. It is a place of amazing natural beauty.

Cylinder Beach has 8 sites you can camp on with a camper trailer or Caravan, all have power and water

So after enjoying one of our many trips to Cylinder in May, where we paid $47 per night for a powered site, I went online to book our next off peak trip.

Much to my surprise the rate per night had skyrocketed to anywhere between $89 to $98 per night making it probably among the most expensive powered campsites in Australia!!

Seems to me to be nothing more than blatant price gouging by the operators as the sparse facilities still only give you three minutes of hot water in the shower!!

Our family and one other spent a wonderful week at Cylinder Beach Camp Ground. Fantastic location behind the beach - which is glorious and had a lagoon whilst we were there. The camp ground does not allow vehicles into the main camping area which makes it really safe to let kids roam. Facilities on site are standard although there was also a coffee van at the site (apparently there each weekend and school holidays) and there are also daily visits by the ice guy (also sells milk & bread) and ice cream van.

Great spot within easy walking distance to Foodworks and some dining/take away options.

Only downside was the size of each camp site - small. So be sure to check your set-up beforehand to ensure you can get your tent etc on the allocated space, as they do check.

Despite the small sites, we loved it and will be back.

Cylinder Beach is one of those beaches that mainland locals take for granted, and a beach that others would travel half way around the world to enjoy.

It is fast becoming one of our annual holiday spots.

The Cylinder Beach Camping Ground is perfectly located next to the beach, only a minute walk from your tent - depending on where you're camped.

Our second stay was very different to our first. Instead of wall-to-wall camping in October (think 6m x 6m camping plots) we decided to visit Stradbroke Island at the end of June which is winter in Australia.

As a result, we had so much room to move, kick footballs and feel like we had parts of the camp ground to ourselves. If you aren't fond of crowds avoid the hotter peak seasons and long weekends.

We didn't feel that the cold was a deal-breaker. Just prepare for all weather including rain, wind and chillier nights.

The camp ground has swipe access to toilet and shower amenities. Expect them to be a lot cleaner than other camping spots.

The hot showers are amazing - although could be explained a bit better with the switch system. For example, hold down the button until you hear a small thud noise and number the shower cubicles 1 to 4. 1 is closest to the entry door.

As mentioned in other reviews, the amenities block, as well as the nice and deep dishwashing sinks are cleaned daily. The staff are superstars.

Next to the sinks are powerboards, so you can charge mobile phones (if you need to stay connected via the free WiFi) and other small devices. I spied a woman using her juicer and another an electric kettle. My last trip I saw a group using a microwave!

There are also coin-operated laundry and dryer facilities if you need them.

Besides crystal clear water, white sand and gorgeous walks on which you can spot dolphins and the odd whale, it is also pleasing to see that island management has kept crazy developments at bay.

However, there are enough trappings for those wanting some traveller luxuries: gelato, a French Bakery Cafe (Adder Rock), a bottleshop in the basement of a hotel and a nearby FoodWorks that stocks a good selection of gourmet treats as well as staples.

If staying at Stradbroke Island for longer than a few days do bring a vehicle or bike if you want to explore other parts of the island. Everything else is available here, but not all are quickly accessible on foot or via bus.

We enjoyed the campsites fire facilities after purchasing a $20 bag of firewood at Amity Point. We didn't enjoy the crows that scavenge and rip bin bags to shreds if you forget to put them away.

Price-wise: around $170 for the vehicular barge from Cleveland to Dunwich. Around $350 for 5 nights for a small family. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Camping. Not a hotel.
