“Good but not so good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2012

Cancun airport, that place is a free for all zoo. The resort looks great , the beaches are fantastic and we had a good time. My gripes are as follows, the room smelled of mold, I asked for a room change and upgrade if available and I offered to pay, the front desk did not seem interested. I heard from two other couples that their room a/c was not working. It's great to advertize all of these amazing restaurants but getting a reservation was virtually impossible. We had to keep returning to the reservation desk and enquire as to wether there had been a cancellation. The restaurants were very good and the service great, except for the Arlequin. The bars were inconsistent in their mixing of drinks, I don't mean alcohol content, just the basic flavor. We stayed at the El Dorado last year and had no complaints about anything and they required no reservations for dinner.

We went for 2 weeks from February 18-March 4. Been to the Bahia the last 2 years @ the Coba & Tulum....LOVED IT! This time we thought we would try Akumal as it is closest to the beach & we upgraded to Royal Golden as we did last year. I asked in advance if could have ocean front.....after a few emails back & forth I was assured we would have it. There were 3 of us sharing a room....so we got a Kingsize & they brought in a twin bed so we could have ocean view. The view wasn't the greatest as we had trees in front but we did have a glimpse of it. lol So our flight got in @ midnight - got on bus @ 1am sat on the bus for 2 hours b4 leaving airport....got to Akumal @ 5am since we paid extra we were supposed to have separate checkin w/welcome drink & cool towel. This was not the case....the Royal Golden Front Desk closes @ 11pm so we had to checkin @ the main Akumal. Now they knew we were coming- we should have had priority since we paid extra - Nope! We had to wait for a group of 10 who did not pay extra for "Royal Golden" to get checked in b4 we could then we had to wait for the group of 10 to get transported to their rooms & then we finally got to our rooms @ 6am. Was not impressed. Get to our rooms.....the air conditioning is not working & the fridge is not cold by any means. (We stayed in room 6421)Went to sleep & woke up & advised the Royal Golden front desk that the airco & fridge not working - they advised they would send someone. Noone came or if they did nothing was done. For the 1st week we complained everyday about the airco & the fridge.....NOTHING WAS EVER DONE! Then our toilet broke - we called @ 3pm they assured us someone would come....we left for dinner around 6pm got back around 10pm - still broken. Called the Royal Golden & talked to Alonso he advised someone would be sent.....stayed up til 1am noone came. Again not impressed. There were little ants everywhere in the room so beware! Next morning we went to the Royal Golden again & asked when our toilet would be fixed - there was no record of this in their log as well as all the times we complained about the airco & fridge. Basically told them to get the toilet fixed ASAP or there would be a bigger mess to clean up! 5 mins later toilet was fixed. Air conditioning not fixed & they had the nerve to say the fridge is a cooler only & its not cold - told them when I stayed @ the Coba & Tulum it was ice cold. Talked to manager Guisemme on Friday & asked for a different room since they couldn't get the airco going - couldn't get us a room til Monday - we said fine. He advised a letter would be in our room advising us of the details to transfer rooms - nothing came. Went to the Royal Golden on the Monday @ 10am & were advised we had to be out of the room as of then & wouldn't have access to our new room til 3pm - that was the ridiculous - argued with them as we paid for 2 weeks with no interruptions & that we should have access to our old room until the new one was done. They would do nothing for us - they even locked us out of our room - good thing we packed ahead of time! So we got our room (6805) @ 2pm - all was good except the airco again - no cold air @ all. Complained but again nothing done. The Kingsize bed creaked anytime you moved....again ridiculous for a 5* resort. We had also requested late checkout when we booked as well we asked again as our bus wasn't leaving the resort til 8:30pm. They told us wouldn't know until 3 days b4 we leave. We were ok with that. Went back on the Wednesday - they forgot to ask the manager. Were advised they would ask on Thurs & let us know....went back on Thursday - manager Guisemme not in til Friday plus there would be an additional charge of $20.I told them that was crap & we want it for free for all the problems we had or I want $600 for the non-use of the room. Apparently noone who works the front desk can authorize anything but I was told the person on Friday's morning shift would be able to authorize it. Again....FALSE! I advised on Thursday we were going to Cozumel for the day & wouldn't be back til late Friday night - manager was in @ noon....couldn't understand the fact that we wouldn't be there to ask the manager about late checkout. This was the same Alonso who didn't do anything about our other problems the 1st week. Finally he said he would ask on Friday morning---I went to the Royal Golden again Friday morning & spoke to someone else who advised he would ask the manager -- I asked him for sure since our other requests to him weren't done - he assured me he would ask---got back from Cozumel around 8pm - went to the Royal Golden to see about late checkout & was advised we would get 2 hours for free & anymore time would be $10/hour. As if! Needless to say we were out of there by 2pm but they still locked our keys out of the room - good thing my friend was in the room to let us in. We also had a cockroach in our room - called Royal Golden & this time they actually sent someone in to kill it in record time! The beds are VERY hard even with a mattress topper & the pillows VERY flat. The waiters/waitresses & maids were awesome....can't complain. As for the mini-bar being filled up.....out of the 14 days we had it replaced 5 times plus there were 3 of us to share 1 mini chocolate bar & a tiny bag of chips! The a-la-cartes were excellent - recommend the Gran Turtuga (Brazilian), Mikaido & the Arlequin. The snack shop @ Akumal was repetitive.....hamburgers/hot dogs/fries/rice...chicken was hard to come by & ribs never saw once. Also had to ask for tortilla chips on many occasions as none around. The buffet was good....lots of choices but very repetitive after the 1st week....need to offer shrimp/lobster/crab. The grounds are impeccable....if only their service level was the same! If I return to the Bahia - will not stay @ Akumal again! As it stands I will be trying a different resort next year as this is not a 5* resort by any means!

Room Tip: If you want an ocean front room in Akumal Royal Golden - ask for building 64 or 65 if they will give...

Returned from Gran Bahia Akumal Mar. 6 th . The service there was top notch, the grounds were very clean and beautiful. Guest service manager Gerardo Alonso Mendez went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure our trip was everything we had hoped for and more.It is very refreshing to be around people who will go the extra mile for their guests.

Room Tip: I would ask for ocean view

We went on this trip in the middle of February. Although the Cancun airport was in total disarray, and took us almost 2 hours to get through, we weren't about to let this get us down. The 1 hour 10 minute bus ride seemed long, but when we arrived, we were whisked away to a private check-in building for the Royal Golden section. Very quick here, and our room was only 100 feet away. Our bags were brought there shortly. Almost a private beach and palapa bar close to our room, only 2 minute walk. This area was very close to the water, and a 10 minute walk to the main buffet. Trams ran very often if you don't like to walk. Food was great, and a nice selection of al a carte restaurants where the servers were very friendly and professional. No security concerns here whatsoever. We'd definitely return. Only slight drawback was the really hard bed.

Room Tip: Book the Royal Golden option

This is the second time we have stayed with GBP. The first time was in September 2011 in Coba and February 2012 in Akumal. They are both wonderful resorts. We upgraded in Akumal to the Royal Golden and had Ocean views from our room. Was a great vacation both times we stayed there. We have nothing bad to say about anything. We always were able to find chairs at the beach even in the middle of the afternoon when it was busy. The bartenders are awesome! Will definitely stay with GPB again. Maybe next time in a different country for something new. The only thing I can suggest is to get some better beds. They are really hard.
