Description: The George public house has stood for more than 200 years where High Street bends around Market Square. The three-storey building was grade II listed in 1978. It is described in the listing text as 'c1810 with later alterations' and a 'late C19 inn front'. The premises were referred to in the local trade directory of 1822 as the 'George Inn', with 'Thos.Emery' as their licensee. The 'George Inn' was also mentioned the same year in the Law Advertiser (Vol.2). The inn was later known as the George Hotel for many years and, more recently, as 'The George'.

Arrived just before 3pm it looked as it had been busy no clean tables so shifted stuff on to another empty table. Took staff an hour to clean and tidy up. Ordered food starters came quickly always have to wait for side plates and cuterlery do your food starts to go cold. Then waited and waited over an hour for the main course to arrive had to go and ask where it was then when it arrived it wasn't very appetising lasagna dry round the edges and the salad was slat in a dish chips barely warm. Would have complained but we just wanted to leave some undesirable drunken people In swearing and being offensive. Sorry for the staff who have to put up with low lifes. Won't be back for a while your food is overpriced now for the standards you serve there are much better places to eat at in sandbag.

I was highly dissatisfied to find when I ordered my godfather pitcher that there were no straws I would have liked to enjoy this tasty treat by my self via a lovely paper straw but I could not and had to use the glass utensil that was provided.

Always a nice midweek treat not to cook. The lamb shank with mash and gravy is a firm favourite including a drink for £10.

You just can't complain about this Wetherspoons at The George. Friendly staff, quick service, very popular. The value of meals, which include a drink, are almost unbelievable. Meals have calorific values shown on the menu, which is really helpful. Would like to give it 5 stars, but the toilets are upstairs which can be difficult for some, although there is a disabled downstairs loo also
