We went to the engine 6years ago and the food was fantastic but when we went last week they must of changed hands because the food was average. The place smelt of wet dogs and toilets were below per. We did not return as we were so disappointed and let down from what was a great pub when we last went there.

Food was lovely , not to long to wait , good portions and the staff were very friendly and helpful . Car parking awful if your disabled be prepared for a walk across the road as there is limited parking . The pub seems tired in appearance it lacks curb appeal but food was worth a visit

We visited with friends to celebrate my birthday. Absolutely appalling rooms, dirty toilets, bedcovers seen better days and pillows were without any substance. Bottle tops still on the floor. Our room also mentioned in earlier review here and was the worst of the two, although the other one had paper falling from the walls, dirty window sills and toilets. We were offered an alternative to our room which was marginally better. We couldn't stay and asked for e refund of our deposit made by credit card, which was equal to half the cost of the stay. The man said this would be given but would need to be done by the Manageress who was not there, it seems she has never been there since as none of the calls have found her there or been returned as promised. It's the only place I can honestly say I have been that I have paid for the privilege not to stay! Avoid at all costs. We should have taken pictures but we're so upset at the time didn't think about it until afterwards.

My wife and I are resident throughout the summer at a caravan park at Haverthwaite. If we want 5* food we go to the hotels around Windermere, if we want no frills pub food of good quality we go to the Engine. Karen and the team would be horrified if we weren't happy with our meals, in two years of regular visits there has never been a hint of this happening. Good selection of beers and the football is always on, very welcoming staff, generally a good 'locals' pub. Let's not forget Jasper the resident lunatic dog, a great source of entertainment who has taken a liking to eating beer mats !
My only criticism is that the pub needs a lick of paint but I believe this is in hand, overall, if you're in the area the Engine is definitely worth a visit.
