Just home from short break with our walking club & I would like to add that we could not fault the treatment we received at this hotel. Rooms although dated were clean & comfortable, nothing was too much trouble for the staff & the food served was excellent. Anne the owner was pleasant & helpful. The entertainment each evening was thoroughly enjoyed by our group. Altogether an excellent stay.

Just returned from weekend at Cumberland hotel nice hotel very comfortable, food excellent home made flavoursome and more than satisfactory portions.
Very floral decor and flowers everywhere so if you have allergies to flowers not the best place, bedrooms were small but clean and comfortable, stairs outside and inside maybe four or five down to reception very small lift to bedrooms, this hotel not suitable for disabled people,

Room tip: Does not have views, mine looked into a wall,

Me and another family member had the misfortune of staying here back In May for the David Urquhart - Lake District Explorer Tour. The best day we had was on the way home.

The hotel itself is pretty much right in the middle of a housing scheme and really isn't suitably located near anything of interest or use apart from a seedy looking railway pub and another Working Man's Club a stone's throw away.

Our twin room (#123) had to be seen to be believed. The mattresses could be sqaushed in one hand with no effort, the floor was wonky and creaky. The Bathroom was horrendous, the toilet bowl wasn't even screwed to the floor, the handle was partly sawed off and would only flush intermittently. The bath panel was hanging off. There was also a periodic smell of sewage that was present - probably due to slackening of the soil pipe from the toilet not being screwed down. The towels were threadbare and had holes throughout.

After 2 days we couldn't stay in the room any longer and complained to the owner Ann who then sent an employee to our room who verbally abused us - after telling Ann and the other employee that we had took photo's to prove our experience and that they really are the ones who should be paying us to stay there. We were eventually moved to another room (#125) which was better but not by much. By this point the damage had been done.

The chairs we were allocated in the dining room were falling apart which made eating a very tense affair as you didn't know when you would end up on the floor with your dinner on top of you!. The food was take it or leave it style.

We truly feel fleeced and that we were misold this holiday and that this hotel certainly isn't a fair representation of the Lake District. It truly was one of the worst and most surreal experiences of our life and not one to be repeated. We have forwarded our complaints and photo's onto David Urquhart.

You would need a holiday to recover from this place.

First of all I would like to say how dated the hotel was, for what is claimed to be a great hotel it is stuck in some kind of 1960s floral time warp. The room I stayed in was old, unclean and very basic the television did not work and the lamp also did not work. I enquired about getting a replacement bulb at the front desk. A very nice young girl went to ask and said someone would be into the room to replace it. It was never replaced and the request for a bulb was ignored. The food was awful and was very clearly cheap food that they charge a fortune for. The bar was very overpriced and they were trying to sell Diet Pepsi as Pepsi something which I had to bring to their attention.

But the worst part of the hotel by far was the owners. The owner of the hotel gave disgusting service. I was kicked out of the bar at 11:30pm after being told it was open all night while the owner told me'it was his bar and he could do what he wanted'. I overheard him being abusive towards staff members and customers and i also witnessed him shouting at one of the children stayingin the hotel who was simply sitting in the lobby. Other people i spoke to at the hotel told me they had witnessed his behaviour and were also shocked by it. He can only be described as a disrespectful old man who clearly does not care about the service provided at the hotel.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone i would rather throw my money away then give it to these people.

I stayed here for Business purposes back in January 2016 for one night after my original booking at another Hotel nearby had been messed up. On arrival the Staff are generally quite welcoming and friendly and the first impression is a bit like walking into somebody's home rather than a hotel. The rooms are of a good size but when you go in one it feels as though your stepping back in time to the 1960's with old furnishings and fittings. The bathroom is exactly the same with very old style decor. The rooms however are actually very warm and comfortable and I did get a good nights sleep. There is a restaurant downstairs and a bar area with Sky TV. The bar serves good quality drinks and is reasonably priced and the food in the restaurant is actually very tasty and I was quite impressed with it.

Would I stay here again?? Maybe.. but only if other Hotels nearby were not available but simply as I found it not to be of my taste. On the whole it's friendly, warm and comfortable but very very dated and in need of modernization in my honest opinion.
