Stayed here for 1 night for b and b. Good location in the very pretty Castleton with free parking. Accommodation is a bit dated and in need of a refurbishment but adequate for a one night stay. Our bedroom was very small with not much room to move and the smallest bathroom I have ever seen which was through a squeaky sliding door 1ft from the end of the bed. We ate in the pub at night and the food was excellent and plentiful as was the breakfast the next morning. No complaints, just that the hotel bedrooms could do with a bit of an update. Would recommend.

Stopped here for a quick pint while checking out Castleton.
Staff were friendly. Allowed us with our stroller, and to feed our one year old inside.
Great bar with lots of history. Beams have names of all the landlords painted on.
Didn't eat.

Nice old traditional Inn with a good food and beer selection. Went to another pub further into Castleton later and found the prices much higher than here.

I don't know whether he was an employee, or the landlord, but the barman did nothing to enhance the reputation of this pub. When we arrived there was a queue of (mostly middle-aged) customers waiting to be served. He had no handle on who he should serve first, and chose one at random. There followed a general grumble, sorted out by the customers themselves, before the correct order of service was restored. No apology from barman, instead he looked on the verge of losing control. When it came to ordering our food, one of our party suggested ordering our mains and pudding at the same time, to make it easier for him. He told us that he couldn't possibly accept our suggestion, as all the food would be served at the same time! The result was that everyone ate in a sort of cowed silence. The food, incidentally, was excellent. My steak and ale pie was generously portioned, and came with wonderfully creamy mash and al dente vegetables. Our friend the barman hadn't finished though. As our mains were being cleared he came across to tell us to order our puddings quickly, as the kitchen might be closing early. It was 8:30 pm!

I took my mum for a meal for her birthday.
We both had prawn starters which were lovely , but the mains!!

Mum had belly pork and I had the lamb shank.

The portions are huge !!
The lamb was tender dropped off the bone , both meals were delicious

The staff were friendly and service was impeccable .
Definitely going back .
