I have just returned from a night away at this hotel with my husband and can honestly say we were not disappointed. Everything was perfect, the staff were all friendly and helpful especially Janine. The bedroom & bathroom was spotless as were all the public areas. The bedroom was nice and pleasantly decorated - it had everything we needed and there was even a complementary chocolate bunny (nice little Easter treat) Breakfast was very nice with good fresh ingredients used. We will defiantly be back maybe when it’s a bit warmer so we can take advantage of the outdoor seating area and pizza.

We stayed here for two nights having taken advantage of a Secret Escapes offer. We were not disappointed

Located in the centre of Thirsk, the Golden Fleece Hotel became an Inn in 1810. Having recently undergone a major refurbishment, whilst sensitively retaining many features of its historical heritage, guests will not be disappointed at the high standard of comfort it offers. Our room was of a good size, furnished to a high standard and the bathroom was large and had both a bath and overhead shower.

As we had other arrangements to eat out, we did not sample the hotel’s food, except to say that if it is of the same excellent standard as the breakfast we enjoyed it seems a good idea to sample their fayre. The other reason not to doubt their culinary expertise is that on both nights, the restaurant and bar areas were buzzing with people enjoying themselves. Breakfast consisted of a wide choice of cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurts, fruit salad croissants, danish pastries etc, but the hot courses were served to table - how wonderful is that nowadays!

However, the best surprise is afforded by the staff. Not only are they professional, but their friendly nature is nothing short of remarkable. You can’t help but feel happy and content and it will make you want to come back. We will!

We had booked a table for 8 of us for Mother’s Day. When we arrived we were impressed with the presentation an decoration of the Golden Fleece. There was a welcoming atmosphere and we had our own room looking onto the market square. The food was a reasonable price when we looked at the set menu. This was when the cracks started to appear. Once we had ordered the food we went to the bar to get some drinks, we were waiting a significant amount of time to get served and not because it was busy, there were no staff tending the bar, just a kitchen assistant who ignored us and didn’t seek anyone to see to us. We ordered a few drinks which included more complicated drinks like cocktails. The bar staff had little idea how these were made despite being on the menu. Considering the prices were nudging £10 each, the drinks were done incorrectly and when we challenged this the duty manager just rolled her eyes and walked off. The food service was sporadic and none of it came together as it should which didn’t come across as professional. One of the serving staff threw my plate on the table which was noticed by all my family and she appeared to storm off with no apology for a seemingly aggressive action. The food was average, the beef for the roast was lovely but the Yorkshire puddings were hard and stale so they’d been sat for ages. Bit disappointed generally by the experience considering there’s plenty of competition in and around Thirsk.

Stayed for a three night break to explore the area. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and we had a lovely room overlooking the market; be warned however that the market sets up from around 4:30am on a Saturday and a Monday and they are not quiet. A room at the back of the hotel would be better on a Friday or Sunday night...

Ate in the restaurant every night and breakfasted each morning. The food is of a very high standard if a little pricey - heartily recommend the sticky toffee pudding.

I don't want to recommend the hotel too much as it might encourage too many people to stay, especially as we want to go back for another quiet get way soon!
