I was staying overnight with 13 of my teammates as we were playing in a hockey tournament in the area for the weekend. The "hotel" (I would call it more of a guesthouse) is located on top of a pub/bar. So be aware of that. It was noisy - probably the busiest bar in the area.

But some of the reviews on here make it out to be a complete dive - that is not the case. If you're looking for 5 star luxury, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a place to crash for the night, and happy to put up with a bit of noise, it's totally fine.

Omg this place is filthy, stained mattresses, cobwebs, filthy curtains, I could go on and on. Stayed there for just one night never ever again, noisy all night no staff about, the lack of care stands out like a sore thumb I actually feel like my skin is crawling after staying here, how does this place get away with it absolute shambles

Well, I hate shopping so a trip to the Saracens Head Hotel was called for. Great pub with great, friendly, service. Good range of beers with nice seating outside to watch the world go by. We had their Saracens Combo for sharing. At £11.85 a good buy. Nice pub to visit if, like me, you hate shopping.

The Saracens Head is one of the most distinctive pubs/ hotels in Chelmsford and indeed is one of the few buildings/ businesses in that part of Chelmsford (North Part of the High Street) that survives from an earlier era. It is very centrally located and as a result saves on transport cost. For a late booking got a single room for £40 which is a good deal.

However, I would have been somewhat upset had they sought to charge much more. The receptionist (who doubled as server in the bar downstairs) was very polite and efficient so no complaints there. However, get to the room and a whole different story. The mattress was spongy and not the comfiest, room small and in need of freshening up. An earlier attempt to install key cards had been abandoned and normal locks put in but the key card mechanisms were still on the door. The room itself was small but perfectly ok. Where they really fell down was the bathroom. Tiles loose which really constituted a safety hazard and the grout around the bathroom was mouldy. Shower temperature fine but head in need of descaling. In all honesty, it did not look like any decor had been updated since the 'Brit pop' era or indeed even earlier. Saw minimal evidence of any housekeeping in the morning and am guessing staff in general are probably not the happiest.

Can't complain about the location for that price but with a new Best Western and Premier Inn in the vicinity this hotel looks to be in need of a major overhaul if it is to stay in business. A shame as the potential is there...

I found it difficult to find, not least, as it is on a pedestrianised area, and there is no car park. Basically, it needs a fortune spending on it. Also, the breakfast I went for was one of the.... well, it was rather sad. Well done staff, for coping, despite everything else. Not recommended until refurbished.
