We took the Needles Breezer bus from Yarmouth, which delivers you to the door of the New Battery. It's just a couple of minutes walk downhill to the Old Battery, with fantastic views across to the Hampshire and Dorset coasts. The old battery is a maze of old tunnels, well equipped with props, costumes, artwork, historical artefacts and machinery. For the kids (small and 40ish!) there was an amusing "search for the soldier" trail. There's something very atmospheric about the whole place when you've got a 50mph wind blowing and shower clouds hurtling up the Solent. This makes diving into the nostalgic tea rooms all the more inviting. We had been planning tea & cake, with a picnic outside, but very soon opted for a full hot lunch (and cake!)- the picnic could always be eaten later. The period crockery, music and the general ambience of the building made for a very satisfying meal. Top marks for service as well.
I gather from other reviews that the entrance fee to the Old Battery could be seen as a little steep- this is a situation where NT membership really pays off.
