Parking in Alum Bay, (ouch), 20% discount for NT members (a little less ouch) then a long trek to the Battery requiring caffeine fix on arrival. Small cosy cafe upstairs with views out to sea. Standard basic NT fare but good given the cramped space for preparation.

Historical interpretation is good with lots of info boards and small dioramas. Small spiral staircase and narrow tunnel to old searchlight station where you can view the Needles.

After this take a quick walk to the disused rocket testing site and it's small interpretation area - very 50s, 60s Cold War hush hush - interesting.

Walk back to car taking in the abundance of wildlife and view the Alum Bay multicoloured cliffs.

Beware the fog, it can take till mid afternoon to clear fully.

If you like forts and your history unmolested then this is a great place to visit, you can park at the alum bay car park and walk to the battery or take a bus in the peak season. The Battery is very original with lots of interesting features to see. There is not much in the way of technological displays so if you like to be able to see the venues without it being obscured by screens and displays then this place will suit you very well.

Lovely views of the needles here. Would recommend going in to the search light emplacement down the spiral stairs. Very scenic walk to this spot too about 3/4 of a mile each way.

This is a "must visit", on a clear day, for any holidaymaker on the Isle of Wight. The car park is at the Needles Attraction at the foot of the headland, where there are facilities for eating. (Access to Alum Bay beach was not possible due to recent cliff falls.) The walk up is steep at the start, but the Open Top Breezer buses run every 30 minutes, giving superb views across the Solent. Apart from walks, there are two Batteries on the Headland. One is free to all (the New Battery) and the other has admission charges those who are not members of the National Trust, the Old Battery. There are a number of interesting exhibits and the walk down the underground passage to gain the unique view of the Needles rocks is an excellent highlight. There are also plenty of walks up on to Tennyson Down for thos wishing to have a longer walk

Took the bus up to the Battery and the Needles from the car park as walking up would have been a challenge for my husband who has a bad leg. The double decker open topped bus was a great way to get there with marvellous views along the way. We started to go down to the Battery but realised this would be too difficult so chose to go to the viewpoint behind the signal station, this gave us a fantastic view of the needles and the sandy beach. The return trip on the bus was a bit hairy going around the bends but once again great views.
