“Well Equipped Accommodation in a Beautiful and Peaceful Environment”

We were a party of four adults and one three year old staying four nights. The accommodation is clean, bright and light, warm and very well equipped, Even cleaning and washing up materials were provided. As well as the welcome hamper there was a goody bag of activity/drawing materials for the youngest - a nice touch. The master bedroom was very big and had we'd been staying longer I think we would have shared the generous storage in the master as the smaller bedrooms only had a few drawers and a coat hanger on the door. The large open plan lounge/diner/kitchen suited us perfectly as the 'cook' was never isolated and light poured in through the two walls of glass. Outside, the large decking area is a great spot meals, weather permitting, and a lovely place to sit and chill.
Those arriving first were quickly welcomed by Amanda who visited to make sure they had everything they needed and although there was no one on site after 5:00 we had a phone number for out of hours contact.
The site is a meandering hollow fringed by woods (adjacent to our lodge) through which there is an easy and short walk. Ponds in the middle of the site are home to moorhens and rabbits seem to roam everywhere. All of this was perfect for our 3 year old but of course we all thought it was lovely and so peaceful.
Views from the top of the site - by the entrance - are wonderful and it's worth an early morning or late afternoon walk up to the top to catch the sun rising or setting. Benches within the shelter of a semi circular wall are a great place to take in this stunning view .
There is a good sized playroom in the Sanctuary, which is tucked away at the top of the site behind the lodges. Here both the creative and the very active child are catered for with a good, albeit limited, range of toys. We didn't use this much as the woods, ponds and all the wild life provided sufficient interest when we were on site.
With the pretty and interesting town of Richmond being so close this location is the perfect spot from which to explore North Yorkshire and the Moors, and for 'getting away from it all'.

“Wonderful setting with some reservations”
Reviewed 8 November 2014 for a stay in November 2014

We were a party of four adults staying in a three bedroom lodge for four nights. The lodges are clean and well appointed. The floor to ceiling glass frontage provides a wonderful vista over the North Yorkshire countryside.

Staying in November, we were lucky to have a few days of glorious sunshine which allowed us to enjoy the decking frontage for refreshments during the day. It did of course get a bit nippy in the shade and downright parky at night but the lodge's heating is more than adequate, and if you supplement this with the wood burning stove it gets pretty toasty inside.

The surrounding grounds of the property play host to a variety of wildlife and offer some opportunities for shorter strolls within reach of your lodge. The site is located on a steep hill so there are a few climbs if you want to explore the whole plot. There are open water ponds the closest to us housed a family of seven moorhens.

Richmond is within reasonable walking distance but plan your route wisely! I recommend that you do not take the Hurghill Road into and back from town as it is a steep slog. Instead take the lower road (Westfields, I think), which provides a somewhat gentler gradient. There is a guide to some local walks and if you stay on the road into town rather than crossing the fields you can make a note of how to return. There is one steep section, but it is not too bad. We took about 40 minutes at a leisurely pace and one day yomped back up in 30 (it was getting chilly!).

Richmond is a charming town packed with history and sites. Unfortunately, the Castle was and the military museum were closed during our stay. This is not unusual for these types of attractions, as the tourist season does tend to close after the last school holiday in October. However, if you do a bit of research there is still plenty to do and see.

There are enough facilities in Richmond to cater for most of your needs, and if you get really desperate there is a huge supermarket 2 miles away in Catterick.

We used the municipal swimming pool, early in the morning and rewarded ourselves with the best bacon butties in town from Thomas the Baker (£2.25 for a large bacon roll with a hot drink, takeaway only). The walks around the outside of the castle and down by the river and waterfall were fantastic.

All in all this proved to be an excellent base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales.

My only reservations about the lodges is that whilst they so provide ample open plan living space; there are inadequate storage facilities. The master bedroom is large enough with ample wardrobe and drawers and it is en suite. The other two bedrooms are "doubles" but I would say only in the eyes of an estate agent. There was a small chest of drawers in each of the smaller bedrooms and a single, somewhat flimsy hook for hanging a coat on the wall.

We had no problems but that was only because the couple who drew the short straw for the smaller room could use the third bedroom as a wardrobe.

The Lodges are really nice but if you plan to take up maximum occupancy, be aware that you will have to be inventive with the limited storage facilities.

Magnificent stay the weekend for my partners birthday with another couple.

We have a fantastic time, lovely to relax and so peaceful.

Everything you could need is supplied and the welcome hamper comes in handy.

Thanks so much!
