We visited Woods with friends for my partners 50th Birthday. Wow what a great meal everything about the whole evening was superb. They even made a birthday cake which we had to take home because we were so full, not wasted though scoffed the next day. She even said yes to my proposal and we were given a complimentary glass of bubbly. We will definitely be back.

We have a tradition of going out for lunch on Good Friday. Down here in the West Country we have an embarrassment of riches for this kind of activity. However Woods in Dulverton easily compares with anywhere else we have visited.

It looks slightly ramshackle from the outside but go in and you find yourself in a charming bar where locals drink and the atmosphere is laid back and friendly. Next to it is the restaurant. A big roaring fire and the space split by wooden partitions. You could dress up or down here and feel equally comfortable.

Food is great. I had roast pork tenderloin with black pudding and smoked mashed potatoes. The rich sauce was heavenly. My husband had plaice with shrimps capers and brown butter. He loved it but was slightly upset that he just missed out on grabbing the last guinea fowl. However a great sign the food is fresh and when s dish is gone there will not be any scrabbling about in the freezer followed by a blast in the microwave. The sticky toffee pudding left us feeling full and very happy!

The real revelation and I cannot stress enough how brilliant I think this is, is their wine by the glass. Basically if a bottle of wine on their list - which is quite a large one - is under £30 a bottle then they will open it and give you a glassful. Great choice, variety of prices and two very satisfied customers.

This place is a gem. Friendly service, great local food, wonderful atmosphere, great wine list all set in a beautiful village in Devon the loveliest place in the world! Come and see for yourself why this restaurant is so inviting and why the West Country is a foodies Heaven!

We dined here twice during a week on Exmoor, and the quality of the food, wine and service was just first class. Be aware that the restaurant area is close to a busy public bar area, so the noise level can be a bit high (spirited) but for me that just adds to the ambience of this special place.

We were delighted to be squeezed in at very short notice for dinner on a very busy Saturday night. Staff were incredibly friendly & welcoming. The menu was fairly short with plenty of local sourced ingredients. Stand outs included some excellent Gnocchi and a superb starter of Smoked Eel, Belly Pork & Black Pudding. 2 of the party had steaks which were absolutely superb & came with super crispy chips. Now to the Wine List! What a joy! Lots to choose from and excellent prices. I was delighted to find an old favourite in the Gran Cerdo Tempranillo from Gonzalo Gonzalo - yes, that’s really his name!! Organic, Unoaked, fresh and juicy. Delicious & great value at 21 quid. I finished with a superb cheese board. Again, fabulous value at 9 quid. Service throughout was excellent: informal & friendly. We will be back soon!!
