Owner description: Spirit of Tasmania is one of Australia’s most iconic travel experiences, operating sailings across Bass Strait between Melbourne and Devonport on Tasmania’s north coast. Spirit of Tasmania provides travellers with flexibility and convenience when planning a holiday. Our twin ships depart from both ports at 7.30pm and arrive the following morning at 6.00am. During peak season, we also operate day sailings departing from each port at 9.00am and arriving the same day at 6.00pm. On board, you can experience spectacular views, delicious food, great entertainment, relaxation and so much more! Experience the allure of sea travel. It’s fun, relaxing and stress-free. Simply drive on board for a holiday where half the fun is getting there. Embrace the ocean views, stroll the decks and breathe in the sea breeze - there’s nothing quite like it!

Staff were great however instructions given over PA for passengers not to sleep on furniture is not enforced. People were laying across several chairs and staff ignored this. Pointless giving instructions if they are not policed. If people want to sleep during the trip get a cabin as we did. Biggest negative about the trip is the lack of a proper restaurant. We used to love taking the ferry several times a year but since the removal of the restaurant during the last revamp we prefer to fly. We only take the car if it is absolutely necessary. It was a great way to relax, a bottle of wine and a three course meal. Now you get a cafeteria and if you want three courses you get them all at the same time (your main gets cold as you eat your entree) or you go back in the line.
No place to get away from noisy children even the gaming area wasn’t free of them. Staff did make them leave but honestly some parents don’t care what their kids do. Staff do have to be commended on the amount of activities for children. As it was Easter they even had an Easter egg hunt.

We arrived early at Port Melbourne. We went to nearby cafes for a while to pass the time. It takes a while to get on the boat with checks etc. Facilities are great. Cafe, bar and tourist information. We had a small cheaper room for two. It was adequate for the time you are on the boat. Getting off was quick.

Spirit of Tasmania
Friendly staff, nice reception and restaurant, clean bedrooms and toilets/showers and reasonable pricing at the canteen. The dinner is “pay for you’re plate” 1 plate from memory was $24 for an adult and that’s for only one plate so make sure to fill up!
They also have a “brochure hub” area where you can get free maps and brochures and also have a desk to ask any questions. Also have a couple TV’s and Xbox’s, as well as a cinema which is $5-$10 ticket depending on you’re age. You can also leave the inside of the ship and venture around the top and sides of the ships (in restricted areas of course) and get some awesome photos!
Also have a few bars and an Ice Pizza shop, lots of seating areas.
The staff wake the whole ship awake at 5:15 and departure starts, we got off the ship first and had to be down by our cars at 6.
Shower/toilets in our cabin was clean and the public toilets on the ship were also clean.
Definitely recommend getting on the Spirit Of Tasmania! Especially getting on the night ship so you have the whole next day to adventure!

Positives: We booked a cabin so we could get some sleep. The trip from Melbourne was a bit "lively" for an hour or two after clearing Port Phillip, so we were glad we could lie down for it. The cabin is basic, but perfectly adequate for having showers & getting some sleep for about 8 hours. There is a pretty good range of food on offer and prices are OK. Drinks from the bar were OK. Public areas are comfortable. Departure from the ship is well organised & relatively fast.

Negatives: The queuing in Melbourne to board is painfully slow. A bit better in Devonport.
