Owner description: Nominated as a World Heritage Site, Serpent Mound is a prehistoric effigy mound that was constructed by Native Americans at least 900 years ago, possibly much earlier. The earthwork depicts a serpentine form, 1,348 feet long, and represents the pinnacle of a flourishing ancient culture. Visitors can walk around the Serpent earthwork, and view three other ancient burial mounds. A museum, open seasonally, contains examples of ancient Native American tools, interpretive information, and an orientation video. The gift shop features authentic Native American made items, local artwork, archaeology books, and many fun gifts for children.

This was a really neat place to visit and learn about the history and cultures before us. It was great for adults and those interested in history. There's a nice walking trail to walk around the serpent..there's also an observation tower that has the best view of the mounds, though it seems a little in need of some care. Also beware that the restrooms are only open seasonally. Probably not the best for young children as the mounds probably look enticing to climb on, which is a no-no. Overall it was a great day trip for our adult family though!

This is a very important part of both Native and American history. So interesting. I wish the overlook tower was a bit higher so you can see the entire thing at once but it is truly amazing. I would go again.

I think everyone should stop and see this World Heritage Site because the history is fascinating. It is $8 per car to get in. Once you visit the Ranger Station, which is really a gift shop, and then take a short walk around the mound and climb a story and half to see it from the lookout point there really isn't much else to do here. You would be hard pressed to spend more than 20 or 30 minutes here. I'd say make this a waypoint on the way to somewhere else, perhaps the Amish area a bit south. It's not a destination.

We arrived on a cloudy October afternoon and the gift shop/admission office was closed. We spent half hour or so walking the length of the serpent and climbing the 30-foot tower for a better look. The grounds are well maintained, but the serpent form would probably be more impressive on a sunny day when morning or afternoon light would better define the shape.

Family took at side trip to see the mound. Take good walking shoes and plan to be outside. There is a gift shop and short video that explains the mound. It will take about 90 minutes to visit and walk the mound. There is an $8 parking fee for the car on the honor system. Restrooms and picnic tables are present. The site is clean and well maintained. It was a nice family visit.
