My wife had never visited the Pacific Northwest and we were invited to a wedding taking place at Historic Balch Hotel. Best decision ever was to stay at the hotel for two nights over the wedding period and explore the area before several driving days in northern Oregon and Seattle. Staying at the Balch was like having family take care of you. Extremely friendly staff who were always available when needed but never regimenting the experience. Our room was fantastic - we both had the best night sleep in years - and the truly home cooked breakfast options were divine (I'm trying to replicate the oatmeal back in Chicago). We took an old style room with shared bathroom facilities down the hall, which we accessed whenever we needed even though there was fairly high occupancy, but you can also choose a room with bathroom. The lobby area is like a private home front parlor and there's a lovely living room off that where we sat to read and talk with other guests. It was great to walk around the small town of Dufur (local park and acres of farmland are immediately adjacent), and an easy 15 minute drive back to The Dalles. The Balch is a perfect destination after exploring the Columbia River Gorge from the Portland end, and a great start point for the journey we took back: Hood River then the Mt Hood Scenic Byway. I travel frequently and it's a long time since I've felt so comfortable and at home in a hotel anywhere in the world. We will not need another wedding invitation to return to the Balch.

Room tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have a view of Mt Hood. All rooms give a feeling of being in the countryside.

This restored hotel is a lovely step back in time. Dufur is a tiny little spot set in the wheat fields just south of The Dalles with nothing much going on. But it is a good spot for a stopover or base for a drive to Mt. Hood or up to Maryhill Museum. And, because it's almost always sunny, a great place to escape a rainy winter day in Portland. The hotel has very comfortable public areas and the grounds have been beautifully landscaped. The breakfast is absolutely first rate and we also had a delicious light dinner at the hotel. This is an old hotel, so be aware that sound will travel and be sure to bring a robe if your room doesn't have a bath. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

What a lovely experience we had at this wonderful hotel. We loved everything about it. Our room was fabulous, It had a terrific view of Mount Hood and great pillows and firm but not hard mattress. We slept great.
Because it was not a weekend, our menus choices were limited, but the Balch salad was excellent and my husband’s Mediterranean wrap was as well. We had an excellent wine tasting with the manager, who was knowledgeable and helpful in every way.
We very much enjoyed walking around this little town, which was so quiet and old-fashioned that it felt out of time.
We want to come back.

Room tip: The rooms with the view of Mount Hood are of course exceptional

A stay at the Balch Hotel is always a welcome treat. It's a great way to step out of the routine and come back refreshed. It reminds you of a time when travel was a luxury, not a duty. We look forward to many more such stays at the Balch.

Room tip: We've never had a bad room there, but if you insist on an en suite bath, be sure to pick one of those as most do not have it.
