The room was nice with a water view plus we were able to watch two bald eagles and many osprey. However, very small and no desk with which to write or color. Also the chairs could not be placed by the windows so you could not enjoy the view unless standing at the window. When we went to unplug an outlet to use it one of the prongs broke off in the outlet rendering our fireplace and tv useless. When they did come in to fix it over 24 hours later, they left a mess on the floor. To top it off our room wasn’t cleaned which left us with no clean towels, etc. We complained and it was picked up while we were at dinner. The grounds were well kept and the staff was great except for the room cleaning.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask about what furniture is in the room based on your needs. They are very small.

We're very sorry that the room is not the size we are all used to in modern hotels - at the time of construction almost 100 years ago, guests used their room for sleep. All other activities including enjoying the views and surroundings were done on the outside and public spaces.
We apologize that the repairs to the plug took a while. It seemed that the "Do Not Disturb" sign was up, hence the delay. We now have instructions in place to disturb anyway, if a call for service/repair is made.
Thank you for your comments as it helps us to improve our services.

I was very pleasantly surprised with how great this hotel is after reading some of the negative reviews. I stay in a lot of historic hotels, most of which have been over modernized. This is the real thing and I hope they go lightly with any future changes---the original elevator is amazing. From the beginning Rick went out of his way to make us feel genuinely welcome and has a ton of information about the hotel's history, local area and things to do. All the other staff, from room service to front desk did the same. Rooms on the river side have great views and you can hear the waterfall on the hotel property. Yes, there is a train down below the bluff but I didn't even hear it I slept so well here. The wood furniture in the room could use some refinishing but everything else was fine and comfortable. The piano player in the bar is a great touch.

I was concerned when we arrived since a wedding was taking place but the hotel had sufficient staff to cover everything without any delays in service.

It is in a small, rural town so you shouldn't expect the same experience as a large, urban historic hotel but this was much warmer and personal.

Room Tip: rooms on the riverside are quieter

Thank you so much for your kind review and appreciation of our hardworking staff! We are in the process of updating, but with the current charm and character of this hotel in mind, and response from guests has been very positive. Upon request, Bellman Rick is very happy to take guests on a tour that includes areas of the hotel not usually seen by guests, while he gives much of the interesting history of this property. Our 208 foot Wah Gwin Gwin Falls, privately owned by the Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa, is almost a well-kept secret that we'd like more people to know about!

Thank you for your appreciation of the charm and grace of this historic hotel. We look forward to your visiting us again.

We love old historic hotels and this one did not disappoint. Built in 1916 one can imagine the parties that occurred along the Columbia Gorge. The lounge area/bar offered light meals and drinks and the restaurant was elegant and not too expensive. The outdoor patio and views to the river are gorgeous.
Extensive gardens with sitting areas surround the hotel, giving one a quiet area to read or reflect.
We will come back here fore sure. Great location near hood river down town.
Staff is very nice and helpful. We had a river side room and could hear the falls if we opened our window.
A couple of suggestions would be to upgrade the pillows to synthetic down like one that give more and to eventually have central air in the rooms. These were minor things for us, though!

Thank you for taking the time to write your kind review! You are correct in that Simon Benson, builder of this hotel, called it "The Waldorf of the West" in order to attract many to come here, and they did! Everyone from silent film stars Clara Bow and Rudolph Valentino, who used it as his "hideaway" and for whom our Valentino Lounge is named after, to Presidents Taft and Hoover, to the many celebrities throughout the years who have stayed here. The cast of NBC's Grimm stayed here while filming their Valentine show for their last season!

We appreciate your suggestions and will keep them in mind. We look forward to your next visit with us!

The service and views at this hotel are outstanding, but you should know the rooms are small. For example, the bathroom is too small for two people to fit comfortably. If you want great views of the Gorge, this is the place.

Room Tip: Definitely get the river view rooms. The views are amazing

Thank you for your review and kind words about our staff! This charming and historic hotel was built in 1921, in the day when rooms weren't built as large as today. However, the sweeping vistas of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and private 208-foot Wah Gwin Gwin Falls with its soothing sounds, are well worth it! We look forward to your next visit with us.

The occasion was my daughters wedding. I was very impressed by the accommodations, the spa, and the staff. Everyone went out of their way to ensure our stay was exceptional. Weather was perfect, and the views from the bluff were incredible! The area has so much sightseeing to offer, from the river, to Mt Hood, the waterfalls, the vineyards, and much much more. Wished we could have stayed longer. The reception was over the top and magnificent considering our budget. Can’t thank the staff and everyone for making this special occasion special..

Room Tip: Wonderful view of the Gorge!

We're so pleased your daughter's wedding went so well! Teresa Ellifritz, our wedding coordinator, has been planning weddings for over 15 years and her attention to detail is exceptional. Both she, and our entire staff, are committed to every couple having the wedding of their dreams here. Thank you for your appreciation of our hardworking staff. We look forward to your next visit!
