“Great Place to Stay”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

We recently made a trip to the Oregon Coast and stayed two nights at the Waves of Newport. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It is a pet friendly motel that has a very nice "Doggie Area" with plastic bags and a waste disposal. Our room was on the 3d floor with an ocean and lighthouse view. At night we saw quite a few fishing boat lights, so the view was 24 hours. Access to the beach is a short walk on sidewalks. The room was clean and recently remodeled. It has an elevator which helps with luggage. We would stay there again, and enjoy their hospitality.

I read all the reviews before booking the motel. We have two little Yorkies that travel with us everywhere. The location is good. We had a great ocean view. We were on the 3rd floor, but they have an elevator. The room was clean and tidy, except for the carpet. It was very spotted and looked dirty, but I imagine they were extremely busy over the summer and will now be doing some maintenance and upkeep. Refrigerator and Microwave and coffee in the room. They provide a pet area and doggie bags. We will stay again. Didn't get a chance to try the continental breakfast or the pool and sauna, but definitely will on our next stay. It's close to old town and we ate at Nana's Irish Pub, which was fabulous.

My family and I stay at Newport every year. Normally we stay at the embarcadero on the bayfront but this year we decided to try something new. We rented one of the two bedroom condos and it was absolutely horrible. There was grout on the tile in the kitchen that looked like dirt, the light in the bathroom didn't work. It also said we were going to have an ocean view, more like nice view of the trash cans out front. Also, the second bedroom was so small that you could barely open the door. Seriously, it's cheaper to drive down to the Embarcadero and stay somewhere nice. We walked in, and walked back out over to the front office and asked for our money back. It was ridiculous. DON'T STAY THERE!!!!

Room Tip: There are none!

We have had literally hundreds of guests stay in our Ocean Front Condo, this is the first time we had someone complain about it. It is a nice 2 bedroom condo with a unmatched ocean view. If you visit our web page at wavesofnewport.com, you can see photos of the condo. While we stand by the quality of our condo, we certainly understand that some people's taste doesn't allow them to feel the same way. We were happy to refund the guest's money and we hope they had a great stay at another property.

I would like to address some of the specific issues.

1. Second bedroom is small. It is a small room, with a bunk bed. Perfect for a couple, or children.
2. Garbage cans? Not sure what she is talking about as there isn't a garbage can any where on the condo property. From the street side of the condo you see the Motel which is right across the street. From the Ocean side you see nothing but a 100% unobstructed ocean view.
3. Stains in grout on kitchen floor. The tile and grout is light colored, and I'm sure over the years since it was installed there has been something spilled on it and is probably discolored in certain spots. Most tile floors with light colored grout have this problem.

Again, we stand by our quality, 99% of our guests enjoyed their stay in the condo, but we certainly respect peoples opinions that differ.

We spent a night here on our road trip from Vancouver, B.C. to SF. Booked online. The motel is a great deal for the price. We liked the location, rooms and friendly atmosphere. Only mistake we made was not to stay one more day to explore Newport and surroundings! I have certain doubts about the extremely negative comments about this motel.

The hotel has received some negative comments here, but our experience was totally positive. First, the location is excellent. Unlike the chain hotels, which tend to be strung along the busy highway, the Waves is located in the historic part of town, just across from the ocean and on a dead-end street. With no passing traffic and very few pedestrians, you’re pretty much assured of peace and privacy, and you’re within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. We didn’t even have to leave our ground-floor room to watch the sun set over the ocean. Though the room was described as partial ocean-view, it looked straight out to the horizon.

The décor may be somewhat dated, but the room was spacious and clean, the bed was comfortable, there was plenty of hot water, we got a good internet connection, and the fridge and microwave were handy. If we’d had a bit more time, we would have used the pool and hot tub, which are located in a separate building from the accommodation and looked perfectly fine.

A continental breakfast is available from 8 a.m. in the same building as reception. It includes hot and cold cereal, hard-boiled eggs, cream cheese, English muffins, toast, cinnamon buns and fresh fruit. Most people ate in the room where the food is presented, but we took our plates to a brighter, glassed-in seating area on the opposite side of the front desk.

Although the rates on the hotel’s own website are very reasonable for this part of the coast, it may be worth calling to see if something better is available. The rate we paid as walk-ins was $15 lower than the online rate, in part because the hotel offers AAA and AARP discounts, but there doesn’t seem to be any way to select them on the online reservation system.
