We have toured other historical mansions and thought that this one would be similar. The story was done in a very simple way. The view from the mansion was incredible. The hiking paths around the mansion were great. This was a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

The view is magnificent (even on a rainy day). The gate house is not to be missed (it's a bit of an extra walk but is a middle class period home not as often seen). The home itself is really magnificent and laid out perfectly for the site. The furnishings are done in periods, which by the foundation's own unscientific survey of visitors is probably not the most popular choice (and I agree). There is a lovely gift shop on the grounds. But the real star is whoever wrote the room captions and descriptions. There are gems about the n'er-do-well son-in-law who failed at many ventures before he became a manager at a cracker factory (there is a whole novel in there). Visit the basement and learn about how the laundresses were paid 75 cents a day to clean up after a family who loved to hike and spend time in the dirt (another novel). Learn that the general didn't keep horses, but rented one when he needed it for a parade. Plus lots of beautiful grounds for hiking, when the weather is favorable.

I love walking into mansions and seeing how people lived in the past. Each room was filled with furniture and decorations from the past. Your ticket also includes the gatehouse, another home on the property fully decorated and furnished. You can also go outside and see the view and some plant life.

We found this walk in a hiking book. We walked up from 23rd Ave. It's a fun walk up, including a couple of staircases. There are lots of interesting houses to see on the way up. The Pittock Mansion itself is large with rooms furnished in various styles. I was especially interested in the innovative technologies they used (light fixtures that used both gas and electricity, for example). Nice explanations of who lived in which rooms. The grounds are really lovely. It was a little cool and damp when we were up there, but a volunteer guide was encouraging people to come up with picnics on a nice day, which I'm sure would be lovely.

I enjoyed looking through the house and learning about its history. The views of the city are stunning from the garden.
