“Surprisingly Good”

Kona Cafe Hawaiian Barbecue
Ranked #40 of 182 Restaurants in Springfield
Price range: US$4 - US$11
Cuisines: Hawaiian
Description: An authentic Hawaiian Mix Plate restaurant, you can customize your plate with any one or two meats, and any two side dishes. The plates come in a variety of sizes, from our Keiki Plate ($4.25) for the smaller appetites, up to our Big Kahuna ($11.00) for a taste of everything we offer. Our meat is marinated then slowly barbecued over Keawe (mesquite) charcoal, giving it an excellent flavor. Our Angus Tri-Tip Beef is marinated in our teriyaki sauce, then slow cooked over low coals to perfection. Our center cut ribs are marinated for 3 days, then barbecued slowly over the Keawe charcoal. Our chicken is always boneless, we have three sauces to compliment the chicken that also tastes great on it's own - Teriyaki, sweet and delicious, Volcano, for some heat (but not too much!), and our own Coconut Pineapple Barbecue sauce, with coconut and pineapple to give it a sweet tanginess. The Kalua Pork is slow cooked as well, smoky and salty, just like the main dish at your favorite Luau! Our side dishes include White Rice (the main side dish of Hawaii!), as well as Pineapple Fried Rice, Wok Fried Yakisoba Noodles, Potato-Macaroni Salad and Hawaiian Chips.

This restaurant has been established for several years, but we recently tried it for the first time. The menu is somewhat limited, but the food is surprisingly good. Basically, you order your choice of meat, your choice of sauce for the meat, and your choice of one or two sides. It appears that they serve more take out orders than dine in orders. We have now done both: take out and dine in. They also offer catering. It is a small, very basic building, so one should not expect any tropical decor or nice furnishings -- everything is very basic. There is no table service -- you order at the counter and take a seat if you are eating on site. Just keep in mind that the food is what it's all about when you go to the Kona Cafe, and you will not be disappointed. We will continue to patronize this restaurant now that we have finally tried it and enjoyed the food. We have not tried the ribs yet but hope to do so soon.

SMALL place. Small parking lot (use street parking if you must), regular sized menu, lots of rice and meat dishes. Lots of sauces. Fast service, reasonable prices. More pluses than minuses. On south of Main Street, on the corner.
