We stayed in Narragansett for a week. This was by far the best meal we had while we were there. Service was very good. The Basil's Duet was to die for.

My wife and I have been going to Basil's for the last 25 years or so. It shares a characteristic of many of the restaurants in the city of my youth, San Francisco. There are specials, of course, but the mainstays never, ever, change. So if you have fond memories of the spaghetti Bolognaise that you loved when you were 13 at Joe's in the Marina, when you come back 20 years later, it is exactly as you remembered it. About half the dishes on Vasilio's menu fit in that category.

The wait staff is outstanding and professional, not something you expect in Narragansett. There are a few things that are definitely untrendy. First, it is quiet. Even when the place is full. you can actually hear your tablemate. That is not the modern way, where high decibel level equals goodness. The decor hasn't changed in centuries, but why bother to change? It's fine the way it is.

The more you know about food and restaurants, the more you will enjoy Basil's. As they say, the devil's in the details, and somebody not familiar with correct wine service, for example would miss the niceties.

Most of the tiny number of waitstaff has been there for centuries, and the restaurant doesn't seem to hire temps during peak periods. Why expose the regulars to untrained temps? As a result, during peak periods, service is slow, as other reviewers have noted. But--if you have to make a choice in a tiny restaurant, would you rather have excellent slow service, or lousy quick service?

It is a special occasion sort of place, and if you live in the area and come with some degree of regularity, the waitstaff will remember your favorites, even if they haven't seen you for 6 months. My kind of place.

This is the review I hate to write. Basil’s is a small (about 10 tables), upscale French restaurant. We used to think it was the nicest in the area and always came here on special occasions. Prior to our last trip it never let us down. We usually preorder a few large lobsters and have them stuffed with seafood ( crab, shrimp etc with buttered bread crumbs). In the past the food and service has always been excellent.

What has gone wrong?

Our last visit was on July 3, 2014. We had preordered 2 large ( 4 lbs +) baked stuffed lobsters ( at $100 each). We arrived a little early ( 5:45 for 6:00) and had to wait to be seated. This was our first clue that something was wrong. It turns out there are only two employees, Basil the chef, and a hostess/waitress/bartender/busboy. There is no way one lady, no matter how good, can wait on 10 tables at the same time while bussing, making drinks, serving wine and greeting newcomers. Every course arrived very slowly. When the lobster’s arrived they were almost cold. The butter was lukewarm.
In addition to the poor service the lobster stuffing, this time, was poorly made. It appeared to be quickly made and seemed to consist of only roe and some bread crumbs. It was burnt to a crisp.
We paid over $500 for the 4 of us and left without complaining (there were too many people there to cause a scene when Basil came out to check on us) but we probably will not return.

My duck was superb. Wife's lamb was too. Sides were wonderful. Prices for food and wine a little steep. Make a reservation
