Touisset Marsh Wildlife Refuge

We live near this Audubon bird sanctuary / wildlife refuge. It covers about 60 acres of salt marsh, open field and wooded areas. It can be a little wet and muddy due to recent rain but is equipped with wooden walkways installed by a local Eagle Scout as a service project. I frequently visit the marsh area with a kayak (there is no facility to launch any kind of boat from the refuge - I get access from Mt Hope Bay). It is a wonderful place of peace and quiet. The trails are well marked. It is not common to meet anyone on the trails. There are no sanitary facilities or trash recepticals so plan ahead

My girlfriend and I live just outside of Touisset and visit the Wildlife Refuge on occasion. It is a quiet place to go for a nice long nature walk and the only negative is no dogs are allowed. The trails can be muddy at times but it is worth it. There are nice views throughout the property and I particularly enjoy the bridge over the stream.

Go to the fire house parking lot.... gate to the right. Meadows, woods, salt marshes - this refuges has it all. But be careful at times of moon tides - sometimes the trails get flooded. But wet boots are a small price to pay for the peace and solitude of this property.

Beautiful walking trail in secluded spot. Hard to locate but parking lot located next to fire station. Rustic swim if your up to it. Take bug spray.

This refuge is compact and easy to explore. The combination of trails wander through meadows with wild flowers, cool and shaded forests and coastal marsh make it very interesting. My favorite part was the marshland with views of a river / waterway with shorebirds overhead and a few fishermen dropping lines. There is a little wooden bridge to stop on and look at fish and fairly large crabs crawling around.

I would suggest visiting in the "dry" season. It is apparent the water comes up onto the trails and gets muddy (or wear boots). The trails are easy to walk with no real inclines. The trails can be walked in about an hour depending on your speed and curiosity.

Warning: Poison Ivy and ticks present.
