Description: The Historic Shelter Harbor Inn was originally a 200 acre farm built around 1810. In 1911, the farmstead was purchased by a musician and established as a colony for musicians called Musiccolony. Over the years the farmhouse, barn & carriage house gradually transitioned into what is now a charming New England inn located in a serene setting of beautiful gardens and stone walls. The 24 guest room inn and restaurant offers comfort, relaxation, and good food in a warm and inviting atmosphere and is only minutes from local area attractions and our private beach in Weekapaug. Using only the freshest of season ingredients and a variety of cuisines, our chefs take pride in creating the inn's menus. The restored farmhouse boasts a tavern with a full service bar, several dining areas with fireplaces, a cozy library, private rooms, patios, and decks. Guests may enjoy good food and drink whether sitting by a fire, dining outside, or lounging by the rooftop hot tub.

Yesterday we decided to check out the status of Shelter Harbor Inn, a hotel we love and it's restaurant that has always provided a beautiful setting along with very good food and our favorite wine. It's had it's ups and downs but we're delighted to report that our dinner was terrific! Local swordfish, unavailable elsewhere, and fabulous crunchy exterior doughnut shaped mashed potatoes and pea pods plus the chocolate trifle dessert completed a lovely evening in the sun room. Our server Hanna was filled with smiles and competence and as always the bartender was very helpful.

The grounds are as lovely as ever with blooming annuals and grounds thriving from the recent rains. We walked to the water before dining to ensure we had room for our indulgence. It was a perfect evening.

I reviewed this place the last time I went in 2014 and it was not very good. We recently heard that they hired a new chef and the food was better. We decided to go there on Mother's Day with a group of 8. To our surprise, the food was very good. The clam chowder is on of the better I've had at a restaurant - creamy with lots of clams and not thick with roux. Swordfish was prepared well even if it was a bit on the small side. The wine list is smaller than it used to be and no draft beer. Good place for an event.

This used to be a wonderful spot. The bar area to the right was always a place where people could drop in and have a great experience. I hope someone can bring the place back to the way it used to be which was a dependable restaurant with great food and service

Both the breakfast and dinner were excellent. Since it was the off season there was plenty of seating, no wait and quick service.

We are so very sad about what has happened to the Shelter Harbor Inn. We have been going here for 13 years. We would stay in a wonderfully appointed room and eat the most delicious breakfast and go to the beach using the shuttle provided by the inn.

Now it is a mere shadow of its former self. The breakfast menu was 4items without any fresh fruit or the wonderfully locally baked goods they used to serve. It took an hour to get oatmeal. There were only two tables to be served. We realized the kitchen that once bustled with sounds and activity was silent. The wait staff was missing. Those there did not speak english.

One day we returned from the beach, entered the main house to inquire about dinner and could not find anyone in the entire building. Literally, no one in the diningroom, kitchen, front desk, not a guest not a sound. Creepy! There was a number to call if we needed assistance after hours. At 6pm tried the number and it was disconnected.

Learned after leaving the Inn that while we were there they were being foreclosed upon by the bank and in 7 days they were going on the auction block.

We are so sad! We had made this a special spot on a summer break.
It is gone.

Please I hope someone buys the Inn and keeps its historic charm and resurrects the Kitchen to its former self serving locally grown and baked foods.

Jim D. Thanks for the memories. Wish you well in your retirement.
