Description: The Glass Onion is one of Charleston's original home grown neighborhood-based, locally focused, all natural restaurants. Owner and Executive Chef Chris Stewart opened the restaurant in 2008 with fellow culinary colleagues. It was one of the first places in town to support local farmers and purveyors on almost every dish and drink on the menu. An eighth generation Alabama native, Stewart's love and appreciation of southern food shows up throughout the menu which features comfort food and reflects his time growing up in Alabama, and his influences from experience in New Orleans and in the Lowcountry.

We echo what many others have already said: The food, service, atmosphere, and attitude of the people who work here were all excellent. We will definitely be back the next time we visit Charleston. If the parking lot is full, DO NOT park at the restaurant next-door. Rather, park at the grocery store that is just tucked in behind restaurant. The short walk back to your car after such a satisfying meal will do you good!

I have been here several times over the last four years or so. I have never had a bad meal here. Correction... I have never had a meal that was anything less than great.

The first time I stopped in was when I was nearby on a work trip in early 2012, right after I saw this restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I went in and was staring at the menu on the backboard trying to decide (as everything sounded good). One of the chefs was at the window taking orders, and made matters worse by throwing out ideas of other things that she could make that weren't on the menu, all of which also sounded good. I ended up having the smoked pork loin sandwich that was featured on the show. It was excellent, and I still remember it to this day - super smoky pork - and have never had anything like it since. The menu is constantly changing - every time I have been back the selections were all different. The french fries with bearnaise have been a constant on the menu, though - definitely get those as a starter. This last time was another struggle as everything sounded good. I ended up with the fried catfish, red rice, and collards. All excellent, as usual. I also had an okra beignet as a starter - it was very light and airy for a ball of fried okra; remarkably flavorful as well. I usually do not do desserts, but I make an exception at the Glass Onion. My party split a slice of Orange Creamsicle Cake (exactly what it sounds like, yet indescribable at the same time), and a custard topped with a peach bourbon compote (also very good).

I will continue to return each time I visit Charleston.

Although the decide is definitely low-country casual, the food is outstanding. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and attentative. A bit pricy but the menu changes daily offering dishes based on local ingredients.

We went to this restaurant after seeing it featured on Food Network out of curiosity. The outside of the building is one that you would probably pass up just by looking at it, but it is truly the epitome of "don't judge a book by its cover". The fried chicken is amazing! Never thought anyone could make fried chicken like my Granny did, but these people have done just that. You definitely need to eat here if you love down home cooking.

Was in the area and made a quick decision to come here. It was a great decision! The fried tomatoes with pimento cheese was fantastic and the pork belly melts in your mouth!! Wish I lived closer!
