I have been here several times over the last four years or so. I have never had a bad meal here. Correction... I have never had a meal that was anything less than great.
The first time I stopped in was when I was nearby on a work trip in early 2012, right after I saw this restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I went in and was staring at the menu on the backboard trying to decide (as everything sounded good). One of the chefs was at the window taking orders, and made matters worse by throwing out ideas of other things that she could make that weren't on the menu, all of which also sounded good. I ended up having the smoked pork loin sandwich that was featured on the show. It was excellent, and I still remember it to this day - super smoky pork - and have never had anything like it since. The menu is constantly changing - every time I have been back the selections were all different. The french fries with bearnaise have been a constant on the menu, though - definitely get those as a starter. This last time was another struggle as everything sounded good. I ended up with the fried catfish, red rice, and collards. All excellent, as usual. I also had an okra beignet as a starter - it was very light and airy for a ball of fried okra; remarkably flavorful as well. I usually do not do desserts, but I make an exception at the Glass Onion. My party split a slice of Orange Creamsicle Cake (exactly what it sounds like, yet indescribable at the same time), and a custard topped with a peach bourbon compote (also very good).
I will continue to return each time I visit Charleston.
