Owner description: Experience the sounds that define Charleston's musical history...from gospel to Gershwin. Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Frommers Travel Guide says, "the best night out in Charleston...a must see performance. Visit our website or call the box office for concert dates and ticket information.

What an enjoyable experience. It is a must see. Tonight was a little History of Charleston mixed with the music of the time periods. I loved how Reverend Carl included the audience. Most enjoyable. Would 100 percent recommend this.

We attended this weekly musical event at the Circular Congregational Church on a whim during our recent trip to Charleston. Tickets are available at the Charleston Visitor's Center who told us that they sell most of the tickets for the event. We bought them the same day of the show and had no trouble; it was well attended but not sold out.

The church is an intimate and comfortable setting and the event is managed but what appears to be a group of locals from the church. The professionalism and talent of the performers blew us away! These are highly professional and experienced musicians with lengthy bios and plenty to offer. The concept is interesting - the 75 minute concert uses a variety of musical styles and pieces to trace the arc of Charleston's history from its original settlement, through the Civil War (which played heavily in the musical choices) to more modern times. We heard Bach, folk tunes, gospel music, and a fabulous rendition of Rhapsody in Blue. They engaged the audience directly in a very intimate way. The time flew by.

This was a fun and worthwhile way to spend an evening and a lovely, local slice of Charleston.

Learning about the history of Charleston through the lens of music at the Circular Congregational Church was a good way to start our vacation in this beautiful city. Background information was narrated to provide the backdrop for the different types of music that was presented. The Bright Family provided the highlight of this concert as they explained the spirituals they sang with such gusto. Not all the singers were as good as this group and that is why I only rated this concert 4 star.

I was awestruck and inspired by all of the gifted artists and was moved to tears. An hour and a half emotionally charged performance that highlighted early Charleston music and then moved to the Civil War era, Gospel music and the George Gershwin era. Also a good historical perspective was presented around the musical performances .

We saw them at the Circular Church and it was beautiful music that tells a story of the history of Charleston (an even America's history). The Gershwin piano duet was amazing. I also loved the slavery songs sung. The only thing was that trip advisor told us the concert was free and when we got there we found out there was a fee. However, it was worth paying to see the concert.
