I have been to Cru Café several times, and I have never had anything other than an excellent meal. The hamburgers, the shrimp tagliatelle, General Tso's chicken, the fantastic bread pudding, everything is good. Service is on point and very knowledgeable, and prices are less than many Charleston establishments. My one complaint about Cru is that too many people are aware of it, and reservations can be hard to come by, although they do their best to accommodate walkups. If you are in Charleston during temperate weather, ask to sit on the porch and enjoy the surroundings. Don't leave Charleston without a trip to Cru.

This is a charming, small restaurant that specializes in serving the freshest gourmet comfort food they can get. The portion sizes are perfect as is the service. The The Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast and the Chesire Farms Pork Chop are my two favorite entrees. Their Caesar salad is a must. Chef John Zucker continues to out shine his competition. There is a very affordable

Good place for business or casual meal. Limited seating so make a reservation. They focus on local dishes.

I ate at Cru Cafe for lunch over Labor Day weekend. Absolutely loved it! Being that it was Labor Day weekend, the downtown area was incredibly busy. I've been to Charleston plenty of times and had no problem walking up to a restaurant and being seated within 15 minutes. However, our group quickly learned that that would be impossible over the holiday weekend. We originally planned on eating at another restaurant. After calling the restaurant about an hour before we were planning on eating, we got a lot of back and forth and it left a bad taste in our mouth. It was nearly impossible to get a spot at that restaurant (no reservations or "call aheads" for brunch/lunch...only walk ups & then waiting an hour and a half). Fearing that that was going to be the case at other restaurants, I immediately called Cru Cafe (they had been on my "must-try" list for a long time). They did in fact take reservations for lunch (hallelujah!) and it was going to be an hour & 15 min wait which was perfectly fine with us. We kept exploring the downtown area and arrived at the restaurant on time for our reservation.

The restaurant was PACKED. and there was an almost constant stream of people arriving wanting to eat there but didn't have a reservation. They were told it would be an 1-1.5 hour wait and a lot of the people turned around in search of another restaurant. Let me add that our reservations was for 1:45 pm (we called at 12:30). Don't assume that there will be less people eating later in the day and that you will be able to get a spot. We were SO thankful that we had a reservation (and so thankful that they actually did reservations for lunch).

As others have mentioned, there is a "chef's table" that seats about 3-4 people. It is kinda like sitting at a bar with a direct view into the kitchen. They also have a porch (an absolutely divine porch) and that was where we ate. It was a really hot day so the porch was nice because it was shaded and we caught a nice breeze. Typical of Charleston, a quick storm popped up and lasted about 10-15 minutes but it wasn't that bad on the porch (there are shades that pull down that blocked the rain).

Now, the food. They had way too many options to choose from. It is not a large menu (nor small) but everything looked so good! Luckily, I traveled with friends who don't mind sharing their food haha. There was a good mix of salads, sandwiches, pasta, and seafood. For Charleston, the price is actually reasonable (but more expensive than what I am used to in my hometown). Especially for its fairly central location and excellent service. Everyone who greeted us, seated us, and served us was so nice, attentive, and helpful.

Overall a great experience- being vegetarian can be challenging in Charleston but we had a lovely dinner at Cru. Favorite was the mushroom bisque special. Service was friendly.
