“Leamington Lighthouse hard to find but Free”

Hilton Head Range Rear Lighthouse
Reviewed 2 April 2018 via mobile

Interesting but hard to find. Free to visit. Located in a gated community which you have to get permission to access. There are no directions or signs to find it. You have to park in the grass along the golf course to visit. The information box was cracked and there were no packets inside. I wish there had been a historical information plaque that explains the history of it.

After four winters of visiting Hilton Head Island we finally took the time to go on an official tour and our guide brought us here. The lighthouse is very old and huge, plus a long way from the water. The story goes that about a hundred years ago the keeper and his daughter died of exhaustion trying to keep the light going in a huricane and her ghost still haunts the place!

114 steps to the top of the lighthouse. At the top is a gift shop. You can walk outside the gift shop and walk around outside with great views of the water, the golf course, and a marina. No wheelchair access to the top of the lighthouse.

This site is located in the middle of a gated community's golf course. As such, there is no parking (you have to simply pull into the grass along the side of the road), and there has been only the minimal work to keep it preserved. From what I saw, the only maintenance done to it was the minimum needed to keep it from becoming an eyesore to the wealthy golfers - I have my doubts as to its longevity as a historic site.
That aside, it is a must-see for history buffs. The lighthouse, one oil house, and the remains of what appears to be a well and a cistern remain. A restroom has been built next to the oil house in a similar building style to the oil house. It is a nice, peaceful setting, and is certainly worth a visit.
This is not really a suitable site for a family outing, nor for any larger group. There is no admission fee in the off-season, when I visited. I snapped some great pictures here! It was worth the time to find it.

This is worth 4.25 each as there is nice display of old pictures and history on the staircase. The view at the top is very nice and it is great to see above the dense trees that cover the island.
