This is our second visit to Charleston and we visited the Tea Plantation--it is free, plus we didn't have a tight schedule, so we decided to "fit this in". It is located a bit "out of the way" of the other populated tourist attractions, but it's a nice stroll if you have the time. It's a vast plantation and looks like a bunch of bushes everywhere--like a vast field. There is a large building which is the store which has the free tour as well as the free teas to sample. The tour is interesting. It's narrated by a recording as you walk from one TV to another as they explain the tea factory. You are standing the entire time. It's interesting to learn about how they make tea from the leaves in the fields. Our family loves tea and we drink it almost everyday. I think their tea is decent but I must say that the absolute BEST tea is the tea you can get from an Oriental store and Asian tea. They've mastered the tea-making process after centuries of experience and the taste is just so much better IMHO!

The Tea Plantation is only about a 30 minute drive from the City, and it really is a beautiful drive. The last 10 miles of the drive are filled with huge oak trees and plantations. It really seemd like we were stepping back into time. There are no commerical bulidings along the last 10-15 miles on the Island, which really enchnaced the beautiful views. At the plantation, you can take a trolly tour (10 dollars a person) which we did, and I would recommend. We got to see the fields, the green house, and learned the process of the tea harvesting. If you do not want to take the trolley tour, there is a free guided tour inside the main bulding- which was a video about the production process. There were free samples of the tea, and a gift shop to purcashe tea and other items. This tea has just been approved to be sold in "WholeFoods" chains, since it is is an organic tea. We were excited to hear that!! There were several rocking chairs outside the gift shop, and it was a gorgeous day to sit back and "rock" while we sipped our tea. It was very peacful and relaxing!

Even in the winter this is a great place to visit. It is out of the way - 10-15 miles from anything else, but worth the drive since is the only tea grower/processor like this in the US. The factory tour is short, but informative and free, and shows you video of the process when the machinery is dormant in the off-season. The trolley tour of the grounds is more involved and is great even though not free - $10 for adults (kids are free). The shop has free tea to taste/drink, and you can buy teas, tea related cups/dishes/decorative items. There is no lunch food, but there are specialty cookies and snacks for sale. Clean restrooms. If you are interested in tea or just like unique experiences, this is a great destination. The Angel Oak and a winery are also nearby.

My husband knows I love my tea so he took me to the Charleston Tea Planation. It was very interesting. Took a little trolley around the property. Tour guide was excellent and afterwards went into the gift shop. Staff is very nice. Good selection of tea related items. Had some samplese of the tea. Very good. Nice couple of hours doing something different.

The factory tea was informative about the process of making tea, but the best part was the $10 trolley ride into the fields where the tea is grown and harvested, as well as a visit to the greenhouse where the new plants are tended. Our guide was a local retired teacher, and very knowledgeable about the operation. They have built their own harvesting machine, though we did not get to see it in action as we visited in the winter when the plants are dormant.
