Review of Winstead Hill Park

Winstead Hill Park

Only disappointment is that the trees in front of the overlook now block the view that General Hood had when he made his fateful decision to attack the Federal entrenchments at Franklin. What must that sight have been?

I've lived in this community for years & never knew where Winstead Hill was until last month. A nondescript right off Columbia Pike (going south) after the Columbia/Mack Hatcher intersection, you can park and walk up the winding hill to a shelter from which you can view Downtown Franklin. The last high hill south of Franklin gave the Confederate Army a clear view into downtown where the Federalists were pinned against the Harpeth River for lack of a bridge across. It was eerie looking through the binoculars (a free fixture under the shelter). I felt as if I were looking through General Hood's eyes at or close to the exact spot where he made the infamous decision to overtake the Feds, the result of which was the unimaginable loss of so much life.

Took our grandsons (12 and 16 from NYC). Visiting Winstead Hill before taking the walking tour helped them see the field that was marched and fought before getting to the Carter House and the Cotton Gin. Lovely place to walk the dog ON LEASH.

After you've visited Carnton, the Carter House and the Lotz House and have learned all about the Battle of Franklin, stop at Winstead hill and imagine how it might have looked 150+ years ago. It's a very peaceful place to think about the sacrifices Union and Confederate soldiers made...and wonder why...

Cute little park easy to get to from our hotel (the Drury) in Franklin. Nice walking path, very pretty area. Path was less than one mile round-trip. There's also a few monuments and memorials and a history of the area as it relates to the Civil War. Enjoyable and worth visiting. Easy place to visit with young kids. Allow about one hour (maybe even a little less) for the walk and the memorial site.
