Having seen pics online of The Anglers Rest we decided to check it out for Sunday dinner with a view to attending their wedding event on 19th April if it went well. If you were thinking of attending, I can save you a trip if you read on......our experience was so disappointing. We were greeted cordially and seated in an area upstairs. We looked at the menu which was varied and reasonable. We both chose to have the striploin steak, I ordered mine medium while my partner asked for medium-well.
The wine and water glasses on the table I noticed at this stage were dirty, there was a small carafe of water on the table also, which I assumed was meant for drinking but it looked like it could have come straight out of the Liffey, it was that murky looking.
Our food arrived and my partners steak was announced as medium-rare, easy enough mistake to make, when we looked at it it was quite rare and a nice waiter apologised and took it back to the kitchen, no fuss, grand, he even came back to apologise again and he was so nice and so sorry, I felt sorry for him because he was so mortified but he hadn't even taken our order so we assured him that it was ok, we weren't too put out and he shouldn't worry or take it on himself, at this stage there was no real problem. My partner has never returned a dish, ever.
The room was filled with smoke which was billowing from the open fire in the corner. The whole place has a rustic/shabby feel about it but they seem to have confused the shabby/chic concept with just plain worn out and dirty, the ladies room is true testament to this, not to mention the tablecloths which are manky from trailing on the floor. The building is old and the floor of the room we were in shook so violently every time someone walked across it, I felt a little seasick. It was all a bit of a shambles.
Roll on 20 minutes later....the really nice waiter came back and realised the steak had not come back to us, mortified again he went off to find out where the steak went, I was finished eating at this stage, 10 minutes later another waiter arrived back with a piece of steak which was completely cremated, we were a bit sick of waiting so my partner asked for a manager and the bill so we could just pay for what we did get and go home, he didn't obviously touch the food on his plate. The waiter came back in two minutes to tell us that his manager would be with us shortly. 15 minutes later we went down to the main desk as nobody had attended, we met the man who had originally seated us, he started the conversation with 'are you the people the steak went missing on?' And he suggested we shouldn't pay for the steak. He said he would sort out our bill, after much discussion and delaying with other members of staff we were asked to take a seat 'for a few minutes' so they could figure out how to remove the steak from the bill. I asked could we just pay somebody so we could go home, I was quite upset at this stage and conscious that my partner still hadn't eaten an hour after getting there. I tried to tell the man who had greeted us and another member of staff who had come in on the conversation about the other issues I had noticed and explained that it had all just ruined my Sunday, they couldn't make eye contact - he muttered 'yeah, sorry bout that' towards the floor, we paid and left.
We won't be returning for the wedding showcase, or any other time.
