“What a waste of money”

Do yourself a favour spend your well earned money elsewhere. Easter weekend the Manor House closed. Far too much charged for entry nearly £10.00 each. Only gardens open which basically was just a quick walk around at this the of year. Felt a little ripped off to say the least, £20 in full bloom would have been expensive.

Lovely place and lots to see - the Japanese Garden is a little hidden but is a perfect tranquil place to go. On the way we saw a Red Squirrel - we have spent hours in the Lakes with little luck but here Squirrel Knutkin was happy to be photographed.

We had heard some very enthusiastic reports about this place - and were not disappointed. The gardens are beautiful - stunning in fact. Not only are they meticulously well-kept, but arranged is a way which presents different styles. For example a whole (large) area of kitchen garden and a fabulous Japanese garden area. Around every corner is something new to be seen - it really is a fascinating experience.

There are also nice quiet ares with benches so that one can sit and rest or contemplate, and there is also a play area for the children. The high spot for me is the high level viewing platform, which affords a view of the whole estate - fabulous!

Finally, we stopped in their lovely cafe which has an internal area and large covered external area. They offer a nice range of breakfasts, light lunches and cakes etc. We sat admiring the glorious views over a cup of very good coffee.

On a lovely day we walked all the way from Gorey to these delightful gardens - at which point we were ready for a rest and a cup of tea. So a relaxing time in the cafeteria was most welcome. The gardens themselves are delightful and varied, from the children’s play area to the quiet and beautiful Japanese area. The jungle path and Willow labyrinth are also fascinating features.

A slight disappointment was that the advertised museum is only open twice a day (and not while we were there), and accessible only via conducted tour. Also the entrance charge of £8.50 each for seniors (obviously more for adults), seems expensive for what is there.

Even though it was Sunday in late September (meaning the Manor House was closed and many of the summer flowers were over) we still had a lovely time wandering around the gardens.

It rained a little but the excellent cafe accommodates everyone under cover and served some really good food.

I would strongly recommend a visit.
