My wife called in here to book a table for New Years Day lunchtime, a specific table was booked. When we arrived at five to one, the table had not been reserved and we were told that there would be a 45 minute wait for food, even though I would calculate that the pub was less than a quarter full of people. Very poor, total waste of time, we walked across to the Wetherspoons Powder Monkey pub which was considerably busier and had our meal in front of us within 15 minutes.

My wife and I decided to take our two kids out for a nice meal early in the New Year. We stumbled across The Clipper and despite what could have been a comedy of errors we had a really good night.
In fairness, they were honest about the problems they had experienced with deliveries over the festive period but even they seems taken aback by the meal substitutions between order and table. Basically, they had no fish and the cauliflower/broccoli cheese morphed into caramelised red onions and olives.
The staff were very apologetic and gave us a round of deserts and coffees on the house. These problems can befall the best of restaurants but not all of them would be able to put on such a good show of customer service.

Well Done!

Where do I start?...Firstly walked in and had to wait almost 3 mins to initially be served, before waving one of the two girls on shift down! One was just stood talking to a bunch of lads, and her friend finally got our attention (the girl with the "eyebrows" and facial piercings) and was very, very rude. Me and my friends we're stood at one end of the bar, and asked us to walk right up to the other end so she could use 'her' till. Why not take our order where we were, then use her till to total up and come back to us?!...Much more customer friendly, especially as it was rather busy and had to work through a crowd to get to her till for her own convinience, not so much for our own - the paying customers!!

We went to the clipper for lunch on a Sunday afternoon with our daughter, our 2 friends and their daughter. The experience started off well enough, clean table, baby changing facilities and a daytime menu of 2 meals for £8.99, we knew it wouldn't be gourmet at that price but thought it would be worth a try.

I ordered the fish and chips and the wife ordered a quiche. Our friends ordered straight after us at the bar and had fish and chips, onion rings and a pie.

This is where it started to go wrong. About 20 mins later 2 meals turned up, the fish looked nice, but cutting into it I found it was all batter and hardly any fish, and the bread that came with it was so dry it may as well have been toast. It was a meal that was edible but rather greasy and not enjoyable.

25 minutes later the meals our friends had ordered had still not turned up!! They went to the bar and the staff just said, 'oh do you still want the food?', no apology! Our friends said yes, but 10 minutes later they wished they hadn't.

The fish they had was smaller than mine, the onion rings were inedible (see pic) and the chips they ordered looked more like mash.

We left the pub wishing we had gone to the one across the road. This place would be fine for a drink, but I would advise you not to eat here.

Popped in here to while away some time and to escape the rain.We had a browse at the menu. Looked like great value!!! Decided we'd treat ourselves to a cooked breakfast and so we both had the traditional breakfast at £1.99.... Sausage, bacon, beans, fried egg, with a choice of hash browns and toast or grilled tomato and mushroom. All for £1.99...Their was plenty there, all very tasty... free range egg by the taste of it too and the sausage was juicy and not dry. Certainly proved itself to be GREAT VALUE..We will treat ourselves again next time we are in Exmouth..Looking forward to it.
