Have stayed here twice now, once in the Granary and once in May Cottage. Both were lovely, with May Cottage edging it for us with the view over the excellent play area. The indoor pool is a key feature of the break, we rarely shared it on either of our visits and our two boys loved being able to fool about without whistles being blown! Lynn and Jonathan with their daughter are excellent hosts, and we felt very well looked after. I agree the road is not dangerous, it is just how Devon is! It is also not busy, we only ever saw the post van, the school bus, a few tractors and very very few cars. There is so much to do within an hour of the cottages, we are hard-pressed to find a holiday so good elsewhere at such a good price!
We stayed at Three Gates Farm in The Granary for a week during October 2013 and had a great holiday. The cottage is a beautiful stone building with two large bedrooms with very comfortable beds upstairs and an open plan kitchen/living room and separate bathroom downstairs. It was a perfect size for us as a family of 4 and was equipped with everything we could want. The heating was set to come in in the mornings and evenings but, when we were in during the afternoon, if it got a bit chilly there was also the option of lighting a wood burner which made the place very warm and cosy. There was a dehumidifier in the cottage with a label asking us to keep it on permanently but it was quite a noisy machine so we turned it off during the evenings when we wanted to watch the TV. It was really convenient to have a parking space immediately outside the Granary (the other cottages share a car park area).
Right next to the Granary is a lovely, warm indoor swimming pool. There were only two occasions during our stay when we saw other people in the pool so we pretty much had it all to ourselves all week. The children's outdoor play area was a big hit with our girls, especially the large trampoline.
The farm is in a beautiful part of the country. It is quite remote and accessible only by narrow country lanes but that is much of its appeal as it was lovely to get away from the hustle and bustle of life for a week and enjoy the picturesque English countryside. However there is still plenty to do in the area. We went on trips to Diggerland (not much more than 30 mins drive away), Dunster (about 45 mins), Tiverton (less than 20 mins) and Bampton (a nice village for a meal out about 10 mins away).
What elevated our week from a very good holiday to a great one was all the extra little touches such as the cream tea on arrival, the complimentary basket of wood for the wood burner, the provision of various floats and toys in the pool, the opportunity to feed the chickens and ducks, the folders of very useful information about the cottage, the farm and the local area, the very active bird table outside the swimming pool window, and the pre-school books and games which we could freely borrow. Jonathan the owner was very welcoming and helpful without being at all intrusive. We only imposed on him once during our stay to sort out a problem with the WiFi which he did very quickly. We requested a cot and high-chair and both were set up for us on arrival. We would definitely love to return to Thee Gates Farm some day.
