We booked the hotel for its location and chose not to take much notice of the more disparaging reviews on this site as there seemed to be just as many complimentary ones. On arrival the greeting was friendly and helpful. We upgraded to a King deluxe room which was spacious and clean with a sea view. The meal in the restaurant was delicious and the staff professional and attentive. We both slept well as the bed was very comfortable and despite the hotel being fully booked there was no noise disturbance from other guests as can sometimes happen on hotel breaks. We both agreed we would return for a longer stay in the future

Make sure you read the booking confirmation as 2 different booking in times, we got the wrong one, but we're told room ready early, went to room and no where near ready, sent to the bar and restaurant and asked for a coffee, no one knows how to use the machine, room was not ready until 25 minutes after it should of been, room nice once ready, but TV remote didn't work, took them 4 hours to replace it. Evening meal nice but restaurant was cold. Could hear everything little noise when some flushed the toilet, then very noisy air conditioner kicked in at 5am! Breakfast continental ok but basically just cereal and friut, this was a present ruined and certainly won't be recommending it to anyone, plus huge dogs of the owners just wandering around so need to be okay with dogs

Room Tip: Don't bother

Well where do I even begin to start!
The good points:
-rooms fairly sizey
-comfortable spacious beds (we stayed in a king size sea view with put up bed for our daughter)
-hotel dogs were lovely and friendly
The bad points
-customer service was awful. We turned up half hour before check in after over a 100mile journey to be told our rooms wouldn’t be ready until on the dot 3pm (we’ve stayed in Portland heights previously who were much more helpful after a long journey)
-my dad got turned away from the bar for wearing shorts as it’s a smart casual dress code apparently however once me and my sister were in there there was a guy in shorts and a baseball cap and a lady in slippers. Don’t know how they can enforce this being a dog friendly hotel!!
-asked for a replacement iron as the one I tried to use to iron funeral clothes with leaked water everywhere and was told they have no spare before even looking then one magically appeared.
-reported my parents room and my sisters room both lacking either an ironing board, iron or both and was told rooms checked last week and all was fine so they must’ve been stolen! No offer of replacement!!
-breakfast was mediocre to be honest. Buffet of cereal, fruit, yogurt, toast and croissant then hot breakfast needs to be ordered either a full breakfast or a veggie breakfast are the only 2 options! If breakfast is not included in your room price DONT pay for it as it’s not worth it!!
-reception area was never staffed we always had to ring the bell for someone to attend!

Overall I wasn’t impressed and I’m certainly not stuck up or expect a lot but considering the reason we were staying a bit of compassion and understanding would’ve been nice. I’ve never met such rude and inattentive staff (the only one who was polite was the young lady in the bar area)
Compared to Portland heights who went above and beyond for us last year I’d rather pay the extra and stay there for the good customer service and lovely buffet breakfast! The maritime is let down by its staff to be honest as with the right staff our stay could’ve been a lot more pleasant and made an already emotional time a little easier!
I do not recommend this hotel and I’m sure you’d get better service in a local bnb if your looking for a cheaper stay

So sorry to hear of your experience but our CheckIn times are quite clearly listed on the booking confirmation and should you have required an early Check-In, then a simple phone call would have been all it would have taken.

As to the circumstances of your visit, how can you expect us to be aware of that !!

Nice Hotel, well-presented marble foyer. The hotel is "Dog Frendly" so if you do not like dogs, stay elsewhere. Friendly and helpful staff, good rooms. The hotel shares the site with a school and an Industrial Estate. It.s an old MOD site and is large.
The main problem was the dogs.Dog mess in the Hotel Car park and the roof terrace, which has great views and is a real attraction to the Hotel, is used as a Dog Toilet.

After using Travelzoo for our last ten breaks this trip is at the bottom of our recommendations, all the others were equal tops.
Portland Bill is an outstanding location, steeped in history. Our visit is now history.
The two bull mastiff dogs were allowed to salaviate over people's clothes, more disgusting was their excrement was left on the lawn outside our rooms window, apparently these are owned by the proprietor.
The service for breakfast was 1out of 10, the cooked breakfast was 0.
We found out why the booking in was so late in the afternoon, the overworked staff from breakfast were the house service staff and did not start cleaning until after their breakfast dutie This I am sad to say let the cleaning side down a good in depth cleaning is required.
The location of the room mirrors, one behind the TV? the bathroom one, two high for most females.
The wc is in need of a good bleaching.
The lift to the 1st & 2nd floor was out of order, a comment from a member of staff, was it hardly ever works?
The hotel has a potential for better reviews, I will say the evening meal was delicious but the waiting time needs to be addressed.
We will not be returning.

Room Tip: Sea view without the dogs mess
