“Jeeps are actually only 2 broken down Suburbans that are barely running.”

I booked a tour with two children on Saturday evening from 4:15 to 6:15pm. We had one other couple on the tour with us. There were 6-8 jeeps (suburbans) out front on the ranch. We were told that they were all retired.
We did ok for awhile, but I was smelling gas fumes sitting in the back and the jeep was making a lot of noise and struggling. We tried to go up a very steep hill and couldn't make it. The guide backed up a few times and tried to get up the hill again. He said the vehicle was having trouble getting gas. He then backed it up and unfortunately hit the canyon wall and we were stuck! There was no going anywhere.

He called the only other driver that was available (since there was only one other running jeep) to come get us. We all got out and started walking to meet that other driver. Our driver told us it was all up hill. He did not want to seem to walk. It was not all up hill. After 10-15 minutes we met up with the other driver who told us his vehicle was not working much better. We did manage to drive back the 3-4 miles to the ranch.

While waiting for the owner, our driver made some comment about how embarrassed he was about driving a broken down piece of junk. We waited for the owner and told her what happened when she came out. She never apologized. She asked if we were wanting some money back and we said yes. She gave us a 20% discount on the ride.

I feel sure they knew in advance those vehicles were in bad shape, but they sent two kids and three older adults out into the Canyon in close to 100 degrees heat anyway. I would advise everyone to steer clear of Elkins Ranch.

We were also told that they recently sold the ranch. Not sure when the new owner will take affect, be he too wants to do jeep tours. Please make sure the vehicles are in proper running order before you risk going out into the Canyon and getting stuck. Before going I had read another review from someone who also got stuck, but thought it was an incidental occasion, not something that happens regularly.

Scheduled tour a week before coming to Canyon. 30 minutes before the tour time I was called by Mary and said they had to cancel the trip or they could take 6 or 7 out of our party of 8. Not sure who she thought we would leave behind. Not impressed or highly recommended.

We enjoyed our tour and the tour guide was nice and informative. The lady that took the reservations wasn't very friendly on the phone. And, when we arrived she was downright unsavory. I expect more hospitality than she gave. Aside from that, the tour was fine. It's dusty and hot, so be prepared for that. But, fun nonetheless.

We had Jeff as a driver & he was a blast. He was very informative & just fun. This was a great way to see the canyon without having to hike everywhere. It is well worth the trip!

Located just outside the Palo Duro Canyon state park entrance, we took the 3 hour tour for $65 per person. It was worth every penny. Bring cash. They don't take credit cards. There were four of us and a guide in an open modified suburban. We went through some rough terrain and we had a ball! We saw deer, all kinds of birds, coyote poop, overlooked the rim into the Canyon and up and down some steep trails. The 3 hours flew by. The ranch is privately owned and is used just for the tours. Bring a camera!
