Vincent Van Gogh and this brother Theo are both buried here. The cemetery was only new when they were interred 120 odd year ago so it's quite big now. There is a very good display sign at the entrance with a contemporary account of Vincent's funeral. It really brought home the tragedy of an oh-too-short but brilliant life. It was a lot more moving than I expected it to be. Well worth the visit.

This cemetery is one of the most beautiful I have ever visited due to it's surroundings and simplicity. It is encircled by the fields where Vincent Van Gogh painted some his last paintings and when I visited the hay was growing and the fields where lush with crops. The colours were so much like his paintings. There were very few tourists around and as I wandered around the fields,it was easy to imagine Vincent walking around with his easel and palettes. The graves of Vincent and his brother are especially poignant and the love they had for each other was extraordinary. The ivy covered tombs are simple and elegant, a fitting tribute to two men who together gave the world so much.

This lovely, old cemetery on a flat top hill a couple blocks walk from Auvers is a quiet repose to many souls. Most notable are Vincent Van Gogh and his devoted younger brother Theodore who died a half year later. The site against one of the outer walls is lush with ivy which further binds the brothers together. It'll be a forever visual in my mind. So sad to have lost the inspired creativity of Vincent (though may his tortured soul rest in a peace he didn't find on earth) and the fine example of a truly devoted brother. Do not miss when in Auvers.

The cemetery is about 30 minutes' walk from the center of town, and contains the graves of Vincent and Theo van Gogh. Theo died six months later. They are buried in separate graves, but the son of one of Vincent's friends planted ivy around both graves so that the site looks like one large grave--brothers linked in death as they were in life. Visitors often leave floral offerings on the graves. One can drive to the cemetery, but it is more interesting to walk.

If you are staying nearby and are interested in Vincent Van G than this little town where he died is worth a visit. I have included a photo of his grave, his brother is buried alongside him. I have also included a photo of the church that you pass on the way to the cemetery. Van G painted this church and the original now hangs in the Orsay Museum.
