Certificate of Excellence
Cuisines: Barbecue
Description: Imagine, the great BBQ joints of Lockhart, Texas just a short trip from anywhere in the DFW area. Lockhart Smokehouse fires up great smoked meat classics that make Lockhart the Barbecue capital of Texas. Great “cue” runs in the blood. One partner is the granddaughter of the legendary Edgar “Smitty” Schmidt, who ran Kreuz Market for over 40 years in Lockhart Texas. Lockhart Smokehouse is the only place in the DFW area you can get Kreuz Market Sausage. And just like the original, the meat is served on butcher paper. The brisket, sausage, ribs and other meats are smoked low and slow over Texas post oak. Updated versions of classic southern sides created by Executive Chef Tim McLaughlin and some Schmidt family favorites round out the menu.

If you like Texas BBQ, don’t miss this place. This ain’t fine dining but it’s dang fine food. It’s an old store front in the old part of Plano. Counter service. The line forms early for a very good reason. Your order comes wrapped in butcher paper, and each table has a roll of paper towels. I’ve been here twice on Wednesdays when their special is beef ribs – about the size of your forearm, with fallin’ off the bone delicious meat. Their brisket is tender and moist, with wonderful flavor. That’s as far as I’ve gotten on the menu. Their sides are pretty good, too. Cole slaw has a nice spicy bite. Oh, yeah, there’s a bar for those who may want a cold one with their pile of meat. If you’re a carnivore, this here’s the real deal.

Better brisket than the chain down the street. Tender, juicy, with just a touch of smoke. Very greasy though. Would like to see them trim a little more fat off before serving. Will try and ask them for a leaner cut next time. The butcher paper they serve on was soaked and almost unusable by the end of the meal. Could use some decent cutlery too as the cheap plastic stuff they give you could hardly cut the meat. Sauce was excellent, sweet with just a little heat. Jalapeño sausage was dry and not all that tasty. Sides of mac and cheese and potatoe salad just ok. Seems like they were almost an after thought, like "Hey, we got great BBQ, but guess we ought to offer something else." Will be back, but it's not going to be my first choice.

If I’d had this anywhere but Texas it would be 5 stars but you have serious competition here. Smells great, sauce is perfect - tangy, peppery, not overly spicy. Sides were ok, neat to have deviled eggs! Need ranch bbq beans, not baked. And how about some baked potatoes? Biggest miss is the brisket - it’s not perfect. It probably would be with another couple hours of smoking - it was certainly well on its way. Loved the local beer on draft. There are so many choices in dfw though - I can’t give Lockhart all five stars. But it’s solid for sure.

This is a place where you order your meat by weight and sides are separate. Prices are very reasonable.
- brisket was juicy with good bark, but did not have a heavy smoke flavor.
- smoked sausage was a bit bland. I should have ordered the jalapeño Sausage
- baked beans were possibly the best I ever tasted!

We came about 12:30 PM on a Monday for lunch. Must be a slow Monday. There were no much a selection: had regular brisket and prime rib that were good, and turkey that was a bit dry. A little disappointed!
