We visited the restaurant during our stay in Austin and I have to say it was well worth the trip. Just the history of the cafe and the friendliness of the staff make it an amazing visit.

Some of the best pork ribs I have ever had. Brisket was also top notch. The MUST try is their famous sausage....the turkey sausage was my fav!

The beer was also ice cold and very cheap.

Stopped here for lunch while traveling thru area. It was an experience for sure 😉. We actually went around the block because we were not sure we were in right place. Very old screen door, opened and first impression was a very old “beer joint”. Now this is not a bar, not a saloon, but a beer joint. Lol. You order at the bar your bbq meal. It was decent very tender bbq, good smoke flavor. Rub seemed to be just salt and pepper. Pretty sure bbq sauce was commercial, potato salad was good. Brisket I ordered was very moist, very tender.
On the way back we tried the highly acclaimed Louis Mueller bbq. Taylor Cafe is better and a lot more reasonably priced.

Taylor Cafe is more than a restaurant, it is an experience. Operate by Vencil Mares, a legend in Taylor and BBQ history.. The restaurant is located under (actually beside the footings) of the railroad overpass. It was built on the the north side of the tracks, which in bygone years divided the community. But everyone has always been welcomed by Vencil. The building is nothing to look at from the outside and the inside is no better. But the food is great.

Vencil's WWII memorabilia and metals [including a sliver star] are in a shadow box behind the counter (by the way, there are two counters with Vencil and staff working between the two. There are also two juke boxes with two different genre of music, Sometimes they both play at the same time). Whether it is the brisket or sausage, meet is smoked to perfection. The sauce is more vinegar based that the sugar based commercial sauces, but delicious and spicy.

You will find Vencil sitting under a portrait of Vencil. Engage him in conversation. You will be glad you did. He is a character of the first degree and has lots of stories to share. If you are under 30 you may not believe a place like this still exists.

Loved this Taylor, Texas treasure! Not sure what I liked more: the food or the 94 year old WWII veteran at the door, Vencil Mares. He’s a living legend from what I hear. Good tasting BBQ and the right price.

I have been a customer since I was a little girl born in Taylor. My granpa used to buy us dry sausage from there came with onions pickles and a loaf of bread and sauce.I love the sauce, I LOVE this sausage. Everyone has diffrent tastes. But I've been living here and coming here or eating the BBQ through my family here for years and it is my favorite in town. The sausage is hanged smoked so it's not all oily. It's dry and throughly cooked verry well and delicious. The sides are your traditional potatoe salad , delicious and cooked beans. Sauce you have to have onions and pickles. They also have brisket and other things. It is a bar so we order and take out or my hubby dad or granpa will stop on the way home and pick it up. I remembered it from my childhood and proudly showed my hubby and kids one of my childhood fav BBQ in town.
