Taylor Cafe is more than a restaurant, it is an experience. Operate by Vencil Mares, a legend in Taylor and BBQ history.. The restaurant is located under (actually beside the footings) of the railroad overpass. It was built on the the north side of the tracks, which in bygone years divided the community. But everyone has always been welcomed by Vencil. The building is nothing to look at from the outside and the inside is no better. But the food is great.
Vencil's WWII memorabilia and metals [including a sliver star] are in a shadow box behind the counter (by the way, there are two counters with Vencil and staff working between the two. There are also two juke boxes with two different genre of music, Sometimes they both play at the same time). Whether it is the brisket or sausage, meet is smoked to perfection. The sauce is more vinegar based that the sugar based commercial sauces, but delicious and spicy.
You will find Vencil sitting under a portrait of Vencil. Engage him in conversation. You will be glad you did. He is a character of the first degree and has lots of stories to share. If you are under 30 you may not believe a place like this still exists.
