A trip to Hildene is a wonderful way to spend a day. The history of the house is amazing- so many artifacts and the guides are very knowledgable. The grounds are great. You can wander the gardens and go down to the goat farm and the Dene. All is walkable and they have trams also. You must see the Pullman car and learn about its history. We will definitely visit again.

i took a tour which was an additional 7.50 over the 20 bucks admission. erik , my tour guide, and the property manager gave me a superb tour. he kept to the 50 minutes time cut off and filled me in with my share of american history and the downton abbey'esque style of living in those days. i particularly enjoyed the piano room with the pipes which made sure everyone in the house would not miss the music spectacle. the flower garden is rather picturesque. the kitchen was also quaint with the knife sharpener, the butlers room, the coffeemachine and the enunciator.

strongly recommend you ask for erik if you opt for a tour!

A visit here is a most wonderful experience. The ground are lovely with a vista overlooking the lands below. The house is preserved as a moment in time from the days Robert Todd Lincoln live here. Robert Todd was a highly successful business man and the home exudes opulence. A president himself of the Pullman Corporation Robert built this home in 1905, a true American success story.

Located just outside Manchester (great town to visit) is the Hildene mansion and grounds. Located on 400 acres, the house was built in 1906 (so two generations after Abe was President) by Lincoln while he was in his 60's. Boasting some 8,000 sq. ft., you get a visit a portion of it and all furniture and accessories are in place.

The mansion and land were going to be sold but at the last minute a non-profit bought it and has since kept it going with improvements from the $20 admission price and donations.

You check in at the visitor center which is very nice and supports a rather large retail area. There is a short video to learn about the place before you tour.

A few steps away you walk to the mansion which is very nice to see. It is two stories with 8 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, butler room and other rooms. Nice formal gardens behind. There are plenty of volunteers to help you around and answer any questions.

Also included in the ticket price is the working cheese farm complete with goats and yes, they make goat cheese (which is sold at the visitors center). It is a long walk but they have continuous shuttles.

There is also the Pullman car featured because Lincoln became the CEO of the company which at that time was among the largest companies in the world.

Great place to bring a picnic and enjoy. They have a very nice picnic area with plenty of tables.

Overall, plan on spending a couple hours and then check out Manchester. The waterfall is only a few minutes away.

We spent the weekend in Manchester VT, and a day at Hildene. We arrived early in the morning and took a tour of Lincoln's house. We proceeded to the goat farm and pullman car before we left for lunch. Unfortunately, they do not have a cafe so we went into town and came back to Hildene. In the afternoon we took a short walk to the wetlands. The history of the Lincoln family home was fascinating. We took a self-guided tour; however I understand that they offer guided tours twice daily. The home is modest compared to what you would see in Newport, but the grounds are outstanding. The views of the mountains are breathtaking. I would make Hildene a priority if you visit Manchester VT.
